Well-done in your use of charcoal. I enjoy your emphasis on smoothing the charcoal to explore how to make gradients. Your figure drawings have a nice smooth and fluid motion. I'm really drawn to your still life drawing as well. It shows another level of experimentation. I find it interesting how your focus shifted from capturing perspective with the use of lines in your library drawing, to capturing light and shadow in your still life piece. Both are well rendered. As for critique I would suggest trying to expand the ways on how to capture shadow (i.e. cross hatching). With your figure drawings you can also try varying the thickness of your lines so as to express that certain areas capture more light than others (i.e. the line between the thighs with be denser/darker than the line along the shoulders). Another thing to try would be to focus more on shadow than lines to capture the roundness of the body in figure drawing. However, I do really enjoy the fluidity of your lines. - Roxanne Olsson
I like your use of all media. All of the drawings flow and have natural lines. Looking at the quick drawings of movement convey the figure very quickly and have very well defined form. The ink work you did was appealing to me. I like the variation of shades and how they give form to the branch and leafs. Still life observation and recreation it interesting. I can see the different shades and shapes clearly. Very Good work. Things that I would consider, using the measuring technique more closely. The lines on the library drawing are curved. Interestingly the way you draw makes it seem natural. I think that you should mix charcoal and ink more often your portrait your images very well separate I feel it would be a good combination for you. Finally, I would like to see some drawings from imagination. You can recreate life and still shapes well. Good work! - Rafael
I really enjoy that you have a certain style that you stick with throughout all your works. The fluidness and consistency of your work is very evident in each piece which makes it more personal and unique as a portfolio. Your portfolio was the one I chose in class as my favorite. I really like your branch/eye drawing and your drawing of the end of a tree with the flowers blowing off. I can tell from your work that you spent a good amount of time and energy on each piece and took your work seriously. You do a great job of shading which creates depth to your drawings. I also like your use of different mediums. You have strong works with charcoal where you display both dark and light values, and you have strong works with just pencil where the drawings are light and detailed. Something that you might work on is stepping outside your box a little bit. I like that your work all has similar style, but at the same time maybe you could try drawing an object that you would never normally draw. Your portfolio has a lot of still life images and people. Maybe incorporating abstract pieces might make your portfolio even more dynamic. Also, another thing you could try to enhance your portfolio is using two or more medias at once. Maybe do a drawing in charcoal and ink, or ink and pencil. I think you have a great portfolio and did a wonderful job this term! -Ashley
I really like the variety of your drawings. All of the drawing are very detailed, but some have more abstract elements to them. One of my favorite drawings is the one on the top row of the city on a hill. This picture reminds me of a mixture of an old Asian city and an imaginary, mystical city. The darkness of the sky makes the city really stand out of the sky and background. One critique I have is that you could emphasize shades in the picture more. You could make it so the sun is rising or setting over the horizon, and the light against the building and hills could be more accentuated. I also really like the eye or branches drawing. It looks really interesting how the white seems to glow over the dark background. The eye almost looks like the eye from lord of the rings. Another drawing I found particularly interesting is the one of the woman with the scars and webs on her face. I really like the variety of features on her face. I enjoy how it is not just one theme; she has a spider web, scar, black eyes, and a chipped chin. I only think that if there was more shading the drawing could pop more. Nicky
I really like the style that you have it shows allot of detail and emotion. I like how you show that you can draw realistic and also abstract pieces. I really like the branch/ eye piece and your quick figures piece. specifically the quick figure though, I think that the way it all blends together like a trippy dance is really cool and eye catching. One critique I would say is you have a couple pieces that are very similar. For example two ballerina feet, and three laying figures. Something to think of would be why not try some new things, go out of the box. Though your style is very good I would like to see more, something like the branch/eye piece. Because it is so different from anything else That is one reason why I think that stands out so much. Tuck
I love the use of bold blacks in your work. Especially in the branch piece that turned into an eye. That is my favorite of your works. I appreciate the way you compose your drawings inside of the frame. It never feels as though there is too much or too little white space inside of the frame. One criticism I would make deals with your figure drawings. Your people seem to end up a bit rubbery. Those damn figures! With more practice I think you could really get a sense of the bone structure and be able to render it onto the paper. I do however like the cartoon feel that the rubber renders gives the figure drawings. I guess it just depends on what you want the end product to be...
I truly enjoyed your work for many reasons. To begin you have demonstrated control of all of the material we explored this term, pencil, charcoal, and ink! I really admire this because I love your flower piece done with ink mainly because you showed much control over the medium, which I greatly lack. Furthermore, my favorite piece is that of the ballet shoes. the fact that you were able to show more than one perspective, or formation is very impressive, all the proportions seem accurate and are very pleasing to the eye.
In addition to that your ability to create depth and formation through shading is done extremely well.
On the other hand, there is always room for improvement. i would say that the one area that I think could be best improved is that doing with framing. Though most if not all of your images pay close attention to this idea, I feel like some of the images such as the ink splatter one could greatly benefit from some cropping and readjusting. In this image in particular there is an area or a cluster of splotches that really draw my attention but get lost in all the other chaos around it.
Equally, I would really enjoy to see your work matted on darker matte. The images speak for themselves very well, especially the one of the woman with the stitches, however you could really make it "pop" if it were displayed in front of a dark background, maybe a gray, black or brown. this then adds to the contrast of the image but allows it to scream "I'm here!".
Really there is not much more I would alter in the least really, but my heart longs to see your library image with a bit more contrast in the tonal range. Varying darks and lights would work well in this image to create a focal point.
All in all you have done great work this term and I loved seeing it!
I really like the use of charcoal and ink, your really use the full range of tones in all your charcoal drawings. I also really like all of the rounded edges that are consistent throughout your drawings. It makes your style really distinct and unique. I remember you saying at the beginning of the term that you had never taken a drawing class before, and all of your work is really professional looking! Very impressive. You have a lot of talent. Some critiques about your work would be in your pencil drawings, the use of more contrast to make them pop more. Also experimenting with the lines of your drawings, maybe more variety in the thickness to portray light and dark better. Another thing would be to mix up your style a little bit, with the composition of your pieces or the subject matter. It would add variety and show your talent better. Overall really good!
Your sense and interest in human movement is made clear through your work. I am especially attracted to your ballerinas, as well as the eye-like charcoal drawing. Your control of charcoal is amazing. Making clear distinctions between densities is something I have had a difficult time doing and I admire your precision. I also like freeness of the "splatter drawing." It looks very liberating. I would like to see you do a piece with a bit more detail. You cartoon-esque style is great but I'd like to see some more life-like pieces because I think you would be very good at it. Overall, excellent work. I love your unique style
I liked your eye design the best because it looks so smooth and neat. I could look at it all day. It's perfect! I also liked the lady who looks like she has a spider’s web on her forehead. She looks like she could be some sort of super hero or something. Your still life from the library is really good too because it is so realistic. I think if you would have shaded a little more it would have even looked better. Your drawings of the women under the ink splatter one are really good. I think that that is your coolest human piece even though it was the one before the final and you were just kind of practicing.
I think the one thing you could have done better is presenting your work. If you had matted it with black or something more professional it would have looked much better. From just looking at your work, it looks like your style with people is a little cartoony. The reason I say that is because the human drawings just look a little out of proportion in places. I think if you were trying to be as realistic as possible, you could work on that a little. But overall great job! Colby
You have a very strong understanding of how to use charcoal and make it work in such a perfect manner. Each one of your works has this very smooth, clean, and crisp feel that makes everything seem so real. The one of the girl with the sugar skull designs is my favorite of all your works. She has these eyes that look straight through all looking at her, and this Frankenstein like beauty that is so different from the average portrait style works. Moving away from her the other charcoal works you did are so real feeling even in their black and white state that it causes one to transcend in to the photo and become part of this black and white world. The one ink work of the tree is very real and soft as well. The close ups of the feet and the eyeball looking work then transferring to the figure drawings and landscape shows how you can zoom in and out so easily. Some thoughts would be that I would like to see more ink and pencil work. There is the one of the tree and the perspective which are both still your smooth style but I want to see a little more variety in medium. Stepping right along with variety is that I want to see more subjects other than figure/still life, maybe movement even. I feel with your smooth style, making movement would be so natural looking. Lastly I want to see more like the sugar skull girl, that work is so amazing and yes you can make perfect real life, but the way that you combined the imaginative and the real with that one should be explored much more. -Jordan Brandt
I love your distinct style! You can really see your dancer background, not just in the subject matter, but the way you draw the figures is so soft, long, dainty and graceful. I especially like the figure from the front, it's really well shaded. I love your use of the charcoal medium. You get clean, soft lines and very smooth shading. One thing I would say about the figures is that you might try to capture the musculature of the human form a little bit more, and do this with shading, trying to get a wider range of values from your charcoal. I think my favorite piece is the one of the branches that look like an eye. That one really stands out with the bold contrast of white and black and its smooth transition of shading. I like how it fades out to the edges. It looks really professional. I don't know why you say you had trouble with the ink. I think the branch is beautiful! I'd say don't be afraid of it and just go for it! One more suggestion I have is to try more variation in matting and presentation. I like your range of different shapes and sizes of paper and I think your mating could reflect this better. The white mats don't really add much to the pieces. I would also suggest trying out different types of paper to draw on and see what you can do with it. Sometimes you can get better ideas using different substrates and seeing how your different media interact with different surfaces. Overall, really beautifully done! Keep drawing and experimenting!
Valeria- Your portfolio shows a wide range of style, especially the charcoal, which has great depth and variety. The sketch of the model in motion is striking because of the sense of movement it portrays. It uses the entire canvas and the poses interact in an appealing manner. It would definitely be cool to see another version of that particular drawing, maybe in another medium or with color, but the quick, sketchy style is perfect. Your model drawings capture her poses really effectively, but I feel as though their interaction with the space could be improved. For example, in the one’s where she is lying down you might add some ripples in the fabric or more shadows, which might clarify what she is lying on. Another thing I really enjoy about your work is the depth of shading and light to dark contrasts. This creates compelling compositions and really makes some of your drawings stand out nicely. One thing you might want to experiment in the future with is a different colored background to mount your work on. A lot of your drawings have white backgrounds, so mounting them on white doesn’t create as effective of a border. Otherwise, it seems like you experimented a lot and produced a quality portfolio.
I really enjoyed looking at your work throughout the term. One piece of work that really stood out to me all term, even though it was very simple was the feet of the ballerina. The shading in that picture and if I’m not mistaken the use of two different mediums in it really bring out the picture and make it look really professional. The rest of your work all has a very free flowing type of style to them. Another piece that I really like is to the left of the ballerina shoes, and looks like either an eye or a cell or something. I specifically remember seeing this up on the wall and loving it. I think I like it so much because it’s really unclear what exactly it is and it is left up to my imagination what exactly it is. If I were to change anything I might have tried to use different colors to mat the work on to give them some character, but your display of pictures is still very professional and well done. I also like how you switch up the borders put behind the pictures. Your work throughout the term was a pleasure to look at and you did a great job this term!
You have a very unique style to your work. I like how my eyes can follow the curves of things like the ballet slippers and the woman's face. My favorite drawing by far is the branch that you made look like an eye from the beginning of the term. I always remembered that and tried to do something like it in my sketchbook but I ultimately failed haha your just have a great style.
Also, your shading is amazing. Such as that shading below the figure drawings body is perfect. And I really like how I can tell exactly what your drawings are. You are very good at identifying and portraying your drawings.
The drawing with the splattered black India ink is very interesting. Especially compared to the rest of your work because your drawings tend to be elegant and very carefully placed. However, this drawing is playful and shows what kind of things you were trying out with your brush.
My only critique is maybe you should try and do something larger. All of your drawings, at least in the portfolio you presented, tended to be the same size or smaller. I would love to something big from you. It would be challenging and I bet it would come out beautiful.
When looking at your work i am instantly drawn to your use of dark bold outlines and strong internal shading. I really enjoyed doing the written critique assignment on your piece involving the the ballerinas preparation process. That piece in particular showcased how you are able to use bold lines while still allowing the work to look calm and gentle. I see a good deal of contrast in line values throughout your work. For example the extreme dark shading on the almost eye like shape, to the light airy lines used for the branches and leaves. Good use of ink by the way, its not easy to use different shades of ink and make it work like that. My favorite piece is of the portrait of the woman with the awesome facial designs. I would have loved to see that same piece with more of the darker lines and high contrast that some of your other works posses. Other than that maybe more variation in cropping and scale could add to your work. Overall very well done.
From your portfolio I can see that you like organic lines and that is successful for you. Your perceptions of body images and form are lovely. I love the piece that features multiple figures in one. They lack details but are strong in movement and line. I also like your abstract experiment with ink above it, it is playful and sharp. The shading on the ballet shoes adds a lot of life to it and I appreciate your variety in where you place focal points on the page. The horizontal figure drawings that stretch across the page have very strong lines and seem to continue reaching. The ink tree, which is seemingly opposite of the figure drawings in that it has a strong inner line and then the background flows lighter, is so light and pretty. You have a great ability to work with both light and heavy materials, contrasting light and dark and line with shading. I wonder how your pieces would have looked had you framed some of them in black. It would create such vibrant contrast. I like your still life pieces and the stack of books in library, but compared to your others they seem much less energized. I would also love to see more large scaled complex compositions from you. You have great creativity and imagination. Keep it up!
What I most enjoyed about your work is that you seem to have a distinct style but you were also able to play around to make very different looking pieces through different techniques and use of mediums. The pieces that stood out most to me have to be the ones of the ballerina’s feet. These images seem so crisp to me and your use of charcoal and shading is beautiful. To me these images look very similar to the charcoal eye/tree thing through your shading and lines. It’s interesting to see these next to each other. While your shading is beautiful in these images as well as in your figure drawings, I would have liked to see more contrast in color in your image of the woman’s face as well as in your interior drawing. I really like these images because of the style and content in the image of the woman, and I love your perspective in the interior image but if you were to use more shading and contrast of color in the images I think they would really pop put and look spectacular. It is obvious you do very well with drawing accurate figures and in your ink drawing of the tree form I can see you do well with making your images more abstract as well. I would like to have seen you experiment more with abstracting your images more through. I think you could make amazing work by combining your technical skills and playing more with making them more surreal and unordinary. Your eye/tree image is a great example of this which I would have liked to see more of in your work. I think if you keep experimenting with abstraction you could create really amazing images. Also I think if you were to do more blending of your shading such as in your ballet images it would really make your work stand out. I love the curvature of your lines such as in the figure drawings, it makes your images unique and playful. Good Job!

Valeria- Your portfolio shows a wide range of style, especially the charcoal, which has great depth and variety. The sketch of the model in motion is striking because of the sense of movement it portrays. It uses the entire canvas and the poses interact in an appealing manner.

Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteWhat I most enjoyed about your work is that you seem to have a distinct style but you were also able to play around to make very different looking pieces through different techniques and use of mediums. Good Job!
