Your leaf is so fantastic! (I want to make sure you get enough credit for it.) I actually like the way it remind me of a starfish. I also really like your globe (?) piece. It’s very simple but it reminds me of the moon and the brush strokes are gorgeous. I like the variety of cropping that you use throughout your storyboard piece. I wish that it wasn’t all so dark though, some contrast with the charcoal pieces would add a lot of depth and clarity. Your interior piece looks really good, it’s very readable and you have a nice use of shading. Overall, you could really add to the presentation of your pieces by framing some of them. I would have framed or back them visually communicate which ones are connected or to make certain aspects pop such as a shape or contrast of shades. That may be part of why I love the globe piece so much. The circular shape of the circle, which is framed by the white square background, emphasizes the roundness and curve of the lines. My second favorite piece of yours is the profile portrait. The various shaded areas is very effective and it reminds me of an old school cameo, with the glamorous girl. To contrast it with the frightening piece next to it, I would have maybe framed it like a cameo, in an oval shape with a decorative framed border and then found a “scary” way to frame the other. Perhaps in a rectangle, with very sharp angles? They way you frame a piece can almost be as important as the piece itself. It’s just one more layer to help communicate your message or idea.
I really enjoy your masterpiece drawings. The way you used the ink to create a strange and creepy figure was great. I am also drawn to the circle above these drawings. It's very graphic and peculiar. I think that your gatorade bottle might be the best drawing you have in terms of accuracy. It was very well done with a good tonal range. Yes, your leaf is nice and very intricate too. You do deserve some credit for the painstaking time it must have taken to get each one of the lines just so. Bravo for your persistence. The two things I would have liked to see through all of the work would be a carry over of the wide range of values from the gatorade bottle and the playful nature of the master piece drawings. These drawings stand out among the rest because they have that little something extra. You took those drawings a step further than the rest and it really shows.
My favorite piece of yours is either the Gatorade bottle or the circle piece. I think you captured the shape of the Gatorade bottle well with the ink, it has good variation of tone. One thing I would say for all your pieces is to work on composition. Most of your pieces are centrally focused and often there's only something in the center. This works really well for your circle. It's simple ad clean with a graphic appeal. However, I think a lot of your other pieces could be more interesting if you tried maybe closer up views off center compositions that move from on side of the page to another. For example, I really like the composition of the drawing of your room. The perspective is interesting and there's a good balance of size and shapes of objects. There's not one large central, objects, but all the objects come together to make a cohesive whole. I would say, however, that the you could create more depth in the piece if you tried more variety of darkness and line weight. You do a really good job of this with your leaf. I really like the intricate detail of the veins of the leaf as well as the variety of tones in the shading. I think you created a lot of depth with the charcoal medium to shade it. I also really like your dark background and I actually like the fact that it doesn't go all the way out to the edge. It gives more shape to the whole composition. Really nice job! I know your trying to find where you fit right now and what you want to do in college, but I think whatever you do, you should keep doing art. I think you found more direction as the term went on. I suggest trying more types of art and different mediums. Be proud of that leaf and keep doing things like it!
I like the leaf a lot. If I remember correctly, you did a variety of drawings of the leaf and each one became a bit more complex. The darkness of your pieces is really intriguing. I want to see more light but I think that desire is a good thing. It involves the viewer. You could use some more variety in your pieces though. They all seem to be in a similar style and I think you could have a lot more fun doing a few other styles-- such as really big loose abstract, or super detailed landscapes/people. You have an interesting perspective and I would like to see you play with that to the extreme. Crazy perspectives! Maybe look at a few famous surrealist artists and get a idea for some far out art.
Omg, are you one funny guy?! Well, I suppose the most important thing to say first and for most is that you deserve much more credit for that leaf than we ever gave you credit for :)! So, good job on that dang leaf it is amazing with must detail!
Now, let us get to business. The piece I personally enjoyed most from your portfolio was that of the two faces done in ink. These images benefit from their composition, the utilization of contrast and heavy hue. These profiles are very strong due in part to their lack of minute detail and their strong contrast.
I think these aspects are equally relevant in the moon or sphere image above these profiles, and I really liked the simplicity of this piece because due to the lack there of detail you created a mood for the viewer to feel, which is one of the most important aspects of art.
Furthermore, I think your gatorade bottle showed your ability to depict literal subjects in a realistic and fun manner. I also think that if you applied the same techniques from the depiction of the water bottle to that of the model you would receive similar awesome results.
I feel that a little more attention to shading and detail to the model would make her "pop".
In addition to that, I think your work with charcoal would benefit from a larger tonal range into whites and away from the mid tones.
Overall you made class very humorous and your works been very enjoyable to look at!
I like your work. they are interesting observations of life. Your ink work is great. One one the interesting pieces for me is the sphere observation. high contrast and looks 3 dimensional. You do a good job with proportions on paper. I like the pencil work but I think you could work a bit slower so that the texture is more even the drawing look good but is a bit hurried. Good work on the leaf's. They look nice. There is little contrast but does not deter from the for it self.
The first thing that I noticed when I looked at your pictures online and in person were the paintings of the faces. I really enjoyed them because of their abstract look, yet it was still very obvious what they were. Your leaf though, I mean, what can I say about the leaf? Probably damn near the best leaf I’ve ever seen! I feel like throughout the term you figured out the shading technique pretty well, and you really showed that in the Gatorade bottle. A couple critiques I have are the I would have given darker and more defined lines in some of the drawings to really bring it to life or to put an emphasis on an area of a drawing. Also, the presentation isn’t very professional. Some of the pieces are wrinkled or just aren’t matted, which would have helped. Overall though. I think you really improved your work throughout the term and I really enjoyed looking at it all.
You explored many different boundaries and tried many different styles with the different media we worked with over the term, I enjoyed it very much. From plain outlined work like the figures and perspectives to strong and bold like the Gatorade bottle, to abstract like your leaf you worked quite hard on. They show that you really embraced the over all focus of the class and you weren't afraid to try anything. My two favorite pieces are the ones yo did of the faces as very dark yet still able to see the expression and action of both. They are very well flattered in the way you composed them in this way as well as giving both the outlined attitude to help further understand both, they Simplistically intricate. I feel like your pencil pieces do not give the true feeling you were going for. Maybe spend a little more time on fully depicting the shades and attitudes of the subjects. Your story board was very easy to follow but very dark and slightly monotone which made it a little hard to fully decide where the subject was in each picture, needs a little variation on contrast. With the perspective I feel like the lines are hard to focus on due to how light they are, which is an easy retrace fix. Overall very qualitative.
am really drawn to your circle. It is so simple and yet so cool. I cant describe it but I think its one of my favorites out of everything done in the class my eye is just really drawn to it! I enjoy the playfulness of your work. Also I think you had a lot of fun with it all and it shows. The shading of the Gatorade bottle really shows a lot of detail. The ink faces that you did also are very cool and I enjoy how they were done. I think you should try and ad more of an abstract aspect to you drawings in the future. A large critique of mine is that noting is really matted. Presentation is also an art form and you should take more advantage of that. Presentation really does add to work and I think it would compliment a lot of what you did. Also I feel you may have over worked the paper sometimes on your charcoal pieces a little bit and that makes some parts of it a bit messy looking. Other than that Great Job!
Colby, The faces in ink are definitely my favorite. I love the style of them! They're so different than any of your other pieces that I wish there were more like them. I also really like the round ball and the Gatorade bottle. You shaded those really well and I really like the composition. Although I think you could have used the negative space better. I think overall your pieces (except for the ink drawings) could use more attention to light and dark contrasting. Using the full array of dark and lights in the charcoal and pencil will really make your work stand out. A lot of your pencil drawings are so light they're hard to see. I also really like your figure drawing. I like how the thickness of the lines vary throughout the piece. Also you could pay more attention to the presentation of your pieces. Overall I like your work! -Joanna Dahl
I like your drawings that are more abstract a lot more than your real life drawings. With the exception of the Gatorade bottle, most of the abstract drawings seem to have more detail than the drawings o real life objects. One of my favorite drawings of yours is also one of your most simple ones; the drawing of the white ball, with black lines streaking across it. The ball looks like so many unknown things that we expect to be in space. It looks like it could be the sun, moon, planet, or maybe a meteor or asteroid moving at a high speed. My favorite drawings of yours are the two heads, where the faces seem to be in the shade. I like how the light and dark are so extremely emphasized in the drawing. It makes it much more dramatic than just having the spot where the light is hitting their faces be a little lighter than the shade on the other half of her face. One critique I have for them is that some aspects of the faces look a little hurried. The drawing of the woman looks very lifelike and real, but her neck distracts from the whole piece. And I am not sure what is in the mans mouth, but it confuses me as to what the meaning of the drawing might be. Nicky
I actually didn’t realize how much work you had put into your leaf until the critique on Thursday. Now that I have it open and I can see the detail I can really see what you meant! The pattern inside the leaf is great, I almost wish you had just filled the entire square with just the pattern. I also really like the copy of the masterpiece, how you made it look like a guy. I think that pieces works really well because of the contrast. I think my only critique of that work would be the smile, it seems to go a bit too far back, but other than that, I think it looks great. I also really like the gatorade bottle. It is very simple and it works well without any kind of background. I also like how you used the ink to shade it as well as to add the dents the bottle has. Also I very much enjoy the sphere drawing. I almost want to try to mimic that one, because it is so simple and elegant! I think your strengths come from simplicity. I think there’s a little bit room of improvement on the figure drawing, I’d recommend that maybe you use softer lines and go over them again and again until they’re dark enough, rather than trying to make a really harsh line from the start. =) -Valeria
For starters, I think the ink faces are fantastic. They evoke a kind of Rorschach inkblot quality, which is really intriguing to me. Another one of your best, in my opinion, is the ink sphere with the interior lines. The simplicity of this one also shows a certain control of line making and use of the ink. I would suggest experimenting more like this, it will help you strengthen your control with the medium. Which will, in the end, help you be able to make ornate detailing in your drawings. Like with your charcoal drawings, by becoming more familiar with the way charcoal will allow you to make various lines you will then be able to make your pieces more complicated with smaller detail. The fork story piece was hard to read because the composition was made so complicated that I think when you tried to convey it with charcoal you may have gotten overwhelmed. So, I would suggest working larger, at least with charcoal, to practice gaining control over line making. Your leaf drawing has great texture, so I would encourage you to continue experimenting with pattern on a larger scale.
Colby, GREAT portfolio! I really like your style of art, and the unique twist you put on each drawing. Your leaf drawing was great and it looks like you spent a lot of time on it! Very detailed. Also, your water bottle drawing is very nicely shaded and has good composition, i'd say I like that piece the best. Also, I think your interior drawing is very well done and well executed. I love the side profile of the woman's face that was turned into the side profile of a monster-like person. I think that was creative and drawn well, and it was funny!! Something to work on would be adding more detail to some of your works, like the teddy bear sitting in the chair and your people drawings. Maybe apply shading to show depth and make it look more realistic. Also, pay attention to proportions when drawing the people, and make sure their torsos are proportional to their legs and shoulders and so forth. Lastly, you might draw to draw using darker lines, because some of your works appear faint and hard to see, and darker lines would help them stand out and be easier to comprehend. Other than that, GREAT job!! -Ashley
Colby, Colby, Colby. Throughout your drawings I can really see a lot of personality in them. My favorite by far was the last one that you did of the woman’s side profile. You first did a really great job of copying the masterpiece. Then you did an awesome job with the inspiration. It is super hilarious and I like the nasty looking tongue. I like how you changed the hair, too. It looks kind of greasy and it really adds to the painting.
I think you did a really good job with the figure drawing. I can tell that you worked pretty hard on this drawing and it shows. Though the legs are kind of strange looking, I like it because it is different and has personality.
And you were right about you not getting much recognition for your leaf. I remember watching you work on this and you were so careful and creative with what you were doing. I truly think that you did an awesome job on your leaf!
One picture that really draws me in is the Gatorade bottle. It looks like you used black India ink and your use of shading is great. You also did a good job at drawing this one exact.
Your work has always been interesting, playful, and at times just plain weird. By that i am referring to that whole series of drawings about the coffee mug battling depression after he gets tipped over and what not. But that was the beginning of the term so it can be forgiven. What i like about these works is that there is alot of diversity within them. From the carefully rendered and realistic Gator-aid bottle to the masterpiece projects lovely lady and her creepy counterpart. The masterpiece copy is my favorite piece because of how well you utilized the ink for shading and giving off the effect that she is made from some sort of shiny almost metallic material. I also just really love the whole concept around that painting. The woman's style reminds me something of that of Grace Kelly which is always a plus in my book.
I think that your work would benefit from using darker lines and heavier shading throughout. Stronger definition would make the work sand out more, because a couple of them are so light they almost get lost in the paper. Overall good job!
My favorite pieces of yours have to be the two portraits. I really like the contrast in color in the faces of these two images. They look really cool and very different from the rest of your work. Your Gatorade bottle looks really good as well. This piece looks very polished and well shaded and in this piece I can see a great improvement in your work. I think you did a really good job with the figure drawings as well. You did a very nice job capturing accurate proportions and shapes of her body. As a critique I would suggest more shading on the figure drawings as well as your interior drawings. I think you did a good job capturing the overall shape in these images, I do think that if you shaded more and used darker lines in contrast to light lines your work would look more finished. Also your interior drawing looks very one-dimensional so I think spending more time shading and creating depth would make it pop out more. I would like to have seen you work more with ink. The ink pieces you have are the best of the bunch I think and if you were to experiment more with ink I think you could create some awesome pieces. Overall good job, I can see mush improvement in your work from the beginning of the term! Keep it up! Claire

Keep it up!
