Very Cool stuff. Creative for sure. I like the play on images like the lemon and the world within. Good changes from media to media. Your selection of composition and cropping of images is diverse, you also did a good job on rendering each material as well as shading for a three dimensional look. You masterpiece portrait is a good example of the details you capture on each scene. One suggestion I have is darker lines on your drawings, you do a good job on the pose drawings you have. I think it would benefit your other work to emphasize certain areas. I Like your work. Good job
I really like the way you mixed words into the work. It adds an element that no one else did all term, at least on a consistent basis. I enjoy the drawings in which you have let your imagination take things to unexpected places. Like putting stitches on the lady's head or turning a lemon into a mouth with a city inside of it. There is a fairy tale quality to these works that is fun to witness. I'm not sure of what criticisms I would give. I guess in some of the work you could, like everyone else, go a little darker and expand the value range of the work to give it a little more oomph. I really enjoy the work.
I absolutely love the Gustav Klimt piece! He's one of my favorite artists and I considered doing something of his, too. I'm glad you did it instead of me, because you did it way more justice than I could have! I really like your view of the back and the woman's face matches the rest of the composition really well. I think you captured the ethereal feeling present in Klimt's work very well, especially with the medium you used. I also like its creative matting. I like your flexibility and that you work with ideas as the piece goes along, like with your lemon city in the mouth. I think that piece could be even cooler if you developed it further, perhaps using a variety of media and darker values. It could really pop if you made the background black with ink or developed more dramatic shadows and highlights within the city. That's something I would say with most of your work. Don't be afraid of darker values. This goes especially for your fire alarm pull and the portrait. It's very difficult to tell what's going on in those picture from as little as a yard away. I would suggest taking advantage of the full range of pencils, especially since pencil seems to be you favorite medium. That being said, I think you should experiment more with different media. I think you use ink in you "tearing my seams" piece, but it's hard to tell. I'd be interested to see what you could do with it. I also really like your charcoal piece. It stands out well and is readable from a distance. I would suggest playing more with highlighting, maybe trying some white chalk and erasing. In all, I think your portfolio shows a lot of variety in shape, size and composition. The presentations in professional and clean!
You have a very definite style that shows throughout all of your work. I think all of your pieces are very well presented and arranged. I’m particularly drawn to the image of the woman with the abstract background. She looks entangled in her environment and gives the piece a very unique look. It was clear that you drew inspiration from the human body and songs for most of your pieces. I really love the one with the seams... it’s such an excellent concept. I also like the woman with the bird. You have such creative pieces! Most of your work is put together very thoughtfully. I would say composition is one of your strengths. I think there’s some room for improvement when you are using charcoal though, I think it’s just a matter of practice. I also think some of your images could benefit a bit from having more contrast. I also think some of the proportions of the body are a bit off, but mostly they work well. I think it all depends on what kind of piece you’re aiming at. Really excellent work, I was always drawn to your pieces throughout the term.
I really enjoy the surrealist element of your work. It feels like a sci-fi story book mixed with Dali (it makes sense why you like him so much.) You have a great way of portraying fantastical characters. You can make humans appear realistic, while adding your own personal style. I see your own personal style in each of these pieces-- the scar, stitching on the women you portray is a very strong symbol. You seem very interested in the female body, and I love to different ways that you choose to portray it. You work very well in pencil-- varied shading, etc. I would like to see some of your work created in various mediums, colors. Perhaps try a new style? Much of your work is in similar style. I love it but it may be helpful for you to expand your comfort zone and try something less-complete and official. Something more abstract? Overall, lovely work. I expect to see your work in a book someday!
Your style of surrealism is quite prevalent in most of your works. It is very interesting and enjoyable to look at due to the many different interpretations one can draw from each piece. But then on top of that you can go and make a very classical depiction of a subject as well and make a figure come to life with your strong attention to detail. All of you perspective drawings are so perfect in composition and proportion. It is amazing how easily you have this strong style of depicting your vision surrealism on your own yet when "restricted" to drawing a real life object or person you make it perfectly just the same. My favorite drawing still is the one of the woman's head that has the stitching. I see a strong influence of Dali and Kahlo all in one. Along with the sun that has this eery presence with making the center black and then it's rays a very dull gray to light gray makes the unfilled space completely filled with sunlight and anything more would just ruin the space. Then all your other work have this same harmony of space being filled with or without an object in it. I would say that you should try stepping outside of your comfort zone and just attempt a cubist surrealist approach. I noticed that you have a strong theme of the female body as being changed in to something more than just a body, but maybe experiment with a male body or even combine the two to really confuse people. On the face of the man with the mustache I feel as if a little stronger use of black would help further personify his facial expression.
Jasmine You definitely enjoy figure drawing and I can see why. You are very good at it. I really like how you use that strength in allot of your pieces and throw in the abstract details like in the Mumford and sons piece (great band by the way one of my favorites and coincidently I’m listening to them now). Your attention to detail is also something that is shown allot in your pictures everything seems to be very organized and put in its place for a reason. Something I would ask is why didn’t you put anything from your storyboard in here? I remember it being very creative, different, and cool, the presentation was also very well done. My favorite piece that you did though is defiantly is the lemon world. I think this is sooooo cool and such a great idea, the amount of time and effort that must have gone into this piece is really great. This piece also shows how much you get an idea and just roll with it and that adds to all the work that you do because everything has meaning behind it. Great work this term!
This will be the easiest of them all to give compliments to, but the hardest to give critiques to. I loved looking at all of your work all term. When the class first started I actually was confused at how you were in Drawing 1 because of how talented you are. Everything about your drawings are good, the shading in all of them is almost perfected, the presentation of the pictures is extremely well done, and your attention to detail is insane. I really like your drawing of the mouth, even though you didn’t intend on it being that at the beginning, it turned out great. I also really like the charcoal eye that you did. I didn’t notice that when I was critiquing you in class and that one, even though it’s really small jumps out at me. Like I said, giving you a critique would be embarrassing because I wish my work looked like your work, so there’s not much for me to say. You did a great job this term and I really enjoyed looking at your work every week. Keep it up!
Jasmine, I love your style! And I also really love the things you choose to draw. I remember you said that you really liked the fantastic and otherworldly, and that definitely comes through in your art which makes it super unique and interesting. I love your attention to detail and the way you shade. I love your Gustav Klimt piece and the lemon head one the best. They are both very different and really show the range of your skills as an artist. Some critiques would be to play around with different media, maybe try mixing it more. It would be cool to see what you do with ink. I think it would add a really different element to your work. Even though the subject matter is different in your pieces, they all have the same feel because you used pencil a lot. Also with the figures maybe pay more attention to shading and texture and the use of line thickness to portray light and dark. Overall really really good! I'm a fan.
My favorite drawings of yours are the one that have more abstract concepts to them. The figure drawings look very realistic and emphasize the curves of the body very effectively, but I think that the multiple components of some of the other drawings make them much more entertaining. My favorite drawing of yours is probably the Lemon World. I think that the lemon drawing is cool enough simply forming the person’s mouth to be shaped like a lemon, but the city inside the mouth just adds a completely different component to the drawing. The city is actually similar to what a city would look like if you were viewing it from across a river or something. I like how the vines seem to be thriving under the surface, but when they break through the ground they become skinny, dead looking trees. I think that the drawing would be even more symbolic if there were more plants under the ground were more lush and eccentric. Another drawing I like is the one of the girl, with the ball type think, and crow on top of her head. I like this picture mostly because there is so many aspects to it that I am not really sure what is going on, so the observer can interpret it however they want. The only problem is that the shading on her face distracts me a little from the overall piece. Nicky
I think your portfolio is very strong and well done. Your works are all so different from everyone else's. I LOVE the drawing of the woman's face with the seems coming undone. I think the way you took the lyrics of the song and made them visible in a picture was so creative. Also, another picture that i think is very creative and interesting is the one of the boys mouth having a city in it. You have a very creative imaginative mind from what i can see in your works and i think your work stands out from everyone else's because its so different and personal. Also, i think your very good at drawing little details and it looks like you spend a lot of time on your work, which is so good! One thing you might work on is paying attention to proportions in the woman's body. you did a great job shading and getting the overall shape but in some of them the torso looks a little to wide. Also, you might incorporate a loosely drawn abstract piece to add diversity because you seem to draw people or still life. but other than that GREAT job and you have an awesome portfolio! -Ashley
The copy of the Klimt piece is great, and in my opinion, one of your best. I think it really pronounces your forte for the whimsical as well as the sensual. Your female figures are really interesting in how you experiment with the abstractions of it. I would suggest you continue to experiment with hyperbolizing the abstractions. Try capturing your subjects from different perspectives. There is a tendency for subjects in your free hand pieces to be limited in the points of view (front and side profile). You have interesting concepts behind your pieces, but I think the emotive concepts are muted by the greyscale pencil work. However, I think you began to diverge from that in your Klimt facsimile. I really like the collage-esque style of work. So, I think your work would really benefit from playing with different patterns and textures to expand your repertoire. Great work!
Well, after looking at your portfolio I can see that you love to draw people. I think 90% of you pictures have something to do with a human. I like the picture of the persons back with all of the cool designs around her because it uses a lot of different shades and really jumps out at the person viewing your portfolio. Its one of your only pictures that uses really dark shades instead of all the same lighter shade of grey. The other one I like is the front side of the women with like the stitching down the middle of her chest and stomach. I thought that looked pretty cool. I like how you started to draw a lemon in the one picture then created a mouth instead. You just couldn’t get away from human anatomy huh?
I think the only thing that I would have to say that might help would be to try to use more shades. Like use some really dark shades in some of your pictures because it is kind of hard to see some of your pictures. If you use darker colors it could make a great picture that wasn’t noticed before. --Colby
I like that you incorporate figures into a lot of your works, and you do it well. I think you are particularly good at drawing and depiction the female figure and it comes through as sort of a recurring theme throughout your work. The couple of pieces involving stitching and seams are really interesting (good use of script in the one with the head as well). You have many great figure drawings and ideas such as life inside the lemon. Really cool.
Your a talented artist so i would just keep experimenting with different ideas, styles, and mediums. Darker lines and more dramatic shading might add to the mood and interest in your pieces. Really cool stuff!
I love your style! Every week I was drawn to your work because of how playful and abstract your pieces are while at the same time they are very accurate and crisp. I can’t pick a favorite but one I really enjoy is the frog. It’s very whimsical yet also very structured and clear. You obviously have a talent for drawing figures. You capture her shape so well and your shading and lines are beautiful! I’m blown away by the figure drawing of her back lying down. I love the content of all your pieces. They are all so creative, I love that the perspective I get from your drawings it is so unique. The only suggestion I have for you would be for the drawing of the microwave, I think you would benefit from more darks in this piece with the light to make it look a bit more finished. Some of your still life drawings would benefit from the same thing as well just to make the images pop out more. Overall I am blown away by your drawings. These are some of my favorite from this term. I love the playfulness you incorporate into your pieces and you also are very precise and neat which is very effective! Good work!
