Exra Credit

Kelsey Taylor brought to my attention that I missed a few of her pieces when I uploaded her post. I've uploaded these pieces below, and for anyone who wants to earn some extra credit you can write some comments for Kelsey on these pieces.

This is a good opportunity especially for those who missed classes, and in general for anyone.
Feel free to post your own work here you'd like to share, or any other links/inspiration etc.

  1. Very cool stuff! I like the one you did of the room with the words, I really like that it's in color. I think it adds a lot and makes it look almost like graffiti. I love color so I'm always happy when people use it in their work! I also really like the interior that your did. The perspective is amazing! I struggle with ceilings especially from that perspective and I think you did a really good job of capturing the room from the angle you were drawing it at. I like how my eye moves around the page and up and down the stairs in that piece also. It would be cool if you made a little more contrast in the lights and darks of that piece though. The small ones of the plants and small creature things is really cool too. I like how different it is from the rest of your work. It's more playful and fun. You should do more ink work for sure!
    Awesome stuff.

  2. I automatically look at your picture of the room because it has color. Not many pieces this term had color in them so I liked that one. Your still life of the stairs is really good. It looks really real. I like your people too because you made it look like she was moving. You can see the movement in the picture which is cool.

The only thing I would have to say that might help would be that it looks like the ink pieces you put up are the ones from when we were just playing with the ink and creating creatures and monsters. I personally don’t think those works are as of the same quality as your other ones. You can kind of tell that you didn’t spend as much time on those as you did with the other ones. Next time maybe don’t post them with your final works because it might take away from the other ones. I’m not saying they are bad because they are good, but not as great as your stairs or room.

  3. Kelsey,

So, is these pieces exhibit anything it is your ability to work well in any medium.

My favorite is that of the stairwell, I feel that you really truly took the time to put in the effort of accurately exploring the right proportions and working with all the right details. i love this work because of the sheer tedious character it triggers the thought of someone who is O.C.D (not in a negative way in a very attentive way I love it).

Furthermore, I really like your ink drawings due to their tonal variations. Ink is pretty difficult medium to grasp and I think you explored it well. I do however, wish that there were a few distinguished lines to add some depth to the images, though that is done pretty well without it, I think some definition would work well to emphasize the work.

As for the piece with the all the colors and repetition, I really like the concept of this image, filling all the space with words, however I think this image has much potential. For example, I think it would be nice to see it done all in pencil or ink and pencil with a deeper message maybe song lyrics or various phrases...I am not sure exactly but I think this would be a great piece to continually explore.

    Nicely done!

  4. Thanks, everyone, for taking a look at these pieces and thanks, Jenny, for putting them up! I really appreciate you guys taking the time and the input.

(P.S. Jasmine, the words are songs lyrics. It's Patterns by Simon and Garfunkel. Some paces I only repeated the title "patterns" and other places I wrote out the whole song.)

  5. The stair case image is the one I was referencing in the other comment on the other post. It is awesome. The sense of depth is fantastic. I find it interesting to see that drawing next to the Simon and Garfunkel one. The S&G drawing is so flat. The contrast of the two shows a glimpse of your ability to work in many styles and mediums. You had a great final portfolio and these drawings fit nicely into it.

  6. I love these pieces. I remember seeing the staircase the first time and loving the detail and perspective you achieve. The way you are able to include the ceiling, floor, upper and lower stairs in the same frame is incredible. Your ink experiments show a light, playful side, I love the animals, they’re precious and adorable. You have a wide range of abilities that I applaud. The figure drawings capture the essence of the moment and translate to paper well. I like the piece of your room as well. It is once again playful and I enjoy the way you incorporate the words into it. The one thing that I find distracting is the bottom of the figure drawings. One is cut extremely short, almost cutting off the bottom of the figure and the other is extremely long. Perhaps if the short wasn’t almost cutting of the figure it would work but it takes away from the bottom figure.

  7. Very impressed by your diversity of skills in different mediums. That pencil drawing of the staircase has always been one of my favorites from early in the term. Such a great amount of detail and proportion. And the room interior filled with color caught my attention instantly when I got to this page. Its really a wonderful piece, in my experience every-time i use color i ruin my work, so i respect anyone who can use color so brilliantly as you have. Also your gesture drawings are pretty awesome and accurate which is always a plus.
These pieces are all different in their own right and I really don't have any critiques for them. Great job!

  8. As I told you in class, the stairwell and "word room" pieces absolutely blew me away. You have a really good handle on perspective, the lines in the stairwell aren't just hard carbon copies of the environment but instead emulate an actual human viewpoint - which to me is quite impressive. They're also very clean and precise, which only aids in the creation of depth and scale.

The colors and spacing of the words in the other drawing is equally impressive. I am especially taken by how the spacing and size of the words helps give the piece a very real sense of depth and texture while maintaining an extremely stylish and enjoyable aesthetic.

I also enjoyed the ink experiments - it's fun to look at each individual character and see how they evolved through your strokes. And, while I realize they are meant to be simple and playful, I would have liked to have seen more detail in the characters. I feel like heavier lines or some extra little touches would help bring them more to life.

All in all, really excellent work here - keep it up!
