You have the most amazing abstract pieces. They always draw my attention. They are so fluid, yet disruptive. You work contrast very well to your advantage. The texture of your abstract pieces is delightful, and I think you are very talented at creating overall visually effective compositions. They have strong focal points and supportive elements that draw your eye through the rest of the pieces. The petal pattern with its dark curvilinear forms over top of the light rectangles in my favorite piece but I also really enjoy the hand reaching up out of the dark abyss. The combination of the realist hand and the abstract form works very well. Your interior pieces could have some more definition though, in terms of shading and line weight, to separate the various elements. You have such contrast in your other pieces but those are very one level in terms of dynamics. Your figure drawing is a good place for improvement in my opinion. The overall forms look good but they are missing energy and life. They come across as very 2D flat shapes. I like your compositions but I think there is also room to work with cropping and seeing how that works for you.
It's clear that you prefer and are strongest in the abstract. I really like your play with pattern and texture. My favorite piece of yours is definitely the vertically oriented ink piece. You balanced the composition really well; it's not just a flat pattern, it has distinctly different regions on the top and bottom that flow well together. I like the variety of different shapes and sizes of paper. I think you worked well with the different shapes to create different and interesting compositions with a variety of focal points. I think your figures and interiors could use a little work. You could try more exact lines and try to use variation of line to your advantage. You do this really well in your abstracts, like the one with the little squares. I think you could bring those exact geometric shapes into your life drawing. Try to think of what you're seeing as the abstract shapes that you're so good with. I would also suggest for you interiors to take advantage of the full range of darknesses of pencils. You can create a lot more interest without a lot of work by using, say, 8B for the foreground or objects of focus and maybe HB for the less important features or background. Your presentation is really nice and professional. I'm glad you matted all your pieces. I might try variations in the size of your mats and see what that does for different pieces. Overall, very creative and visually appealing!
I love the ink drawing low and left. It is a crazy mess of lines that are so playful and engaging. It feels like a dense forest in a fairy tale. Very successful. I also like the use of color on the masterpiece drawings. When you hung your work my eye went straight to those two pieces. The helmet stands out in the drawings and pulls the viewer in, but the color doesn't overpower the image it's just a gateway to the rest of the composition. One thing that would be nice to see is a carry over of the playfulness in the ink to the other mediums, mostly pencil. The pencil drawings feel rigid and flat whereas the ink drawings are full of life.
I really enjoy how abstract your different drawings are. I enjoy just looking at them trying to figure out what is going on. But I also like how you switch it up and there are a group of them, which I know right off the bat what’s going on. It also really looks like you enjoyed using ink and charcoal as your medium, but you are also skilled with the pencil as shown in your picture from the library and of the fireplace. I also really like how professionally matted all of your pieces of work are. They are all perfectly cut and placed on the mat. The only thing I would really add to your work is that they all seem like they’re missing any liveliness. None of the figures or objects really come out and “speak” to me. Overall I think you did a really nice job, I would just like to see some more pictures that weren’t abstract. But overall well done.
You have a great style. You've created a lovely balance between abstract lines and cartoon-esque figures. One of my favorites of yours is the girl in charcoal with the patriotic colors near her. It's a lovely contrast and I can tell there is a deeper inspiration behind it that is intriguing. The hand coming out of the hole is great! It's so magical and mysterious. A sense a story growing out of it. I really admire your ability to be loose and abstract with your work, though I would love to see you expand your talent with more detail and precision. It shines through a little but an entire piece in total detail could be really beautiful. You contrast between dark/light is great and i love the addition of color.
If your pieces show anything in particular, it is that you truly have an eye for utilizing your tonal range. You did a great job at varying your tones from dark darks all the way through to light light, which is kind of a hard thing for many persons to achieve.
I think that one of the pieces that most evidently shows this is the one with multiple squares with the dark ambient shapes in the center that almost reiterate a rose or flower of sorts. Without the varying hues of the pencils grays the piece would not be as strong.
In addition to that I also really liked the boldness of your subject matter with the woman and the american hat. I love that you allow for an area to be completely white and express this in a glowing manner as well.
Furthermore, your ability to explore perspective, composition, and utilize ink to its best abilities is extremely evident through out many of your pieces. My favorite, as I think is the same for many people, is the ink piece that looks similar to that of a forest of trees. The composition is awesome and the varying thickness of the lines adds to the work.
I do however think the charcoal leaf would benefit from varying tonal usage and that it might be fun to allow more of your images freedom from strict taped lines, even though I think that it is beneficial as well.
Your work is very detailed. Its certainly nice. Your portfolio has a good selection of different drawings. Mix medias for interesting combinations. You have a unique drawing that contrasts all the work I have seen thus far. The one with color stars and strips is great, high contrast, the white empty space creates the figures. You use a small amount of color which accentuates the piece. Also on the tree and the hand drawing a single drop of red is dramatical. The composition is great the drawings fit just right into the paper. I like the perspective views you chose on the drawings of rooms. I would say a bit more se of the measuring technique on the pillars may have aided a bit. It looks good never the less and you have good shading on those pictures. Good Job!
To start out I love the remake of the photo of the woman with the sun shining through her legs holding the helmet. I love how all is black and white with the use of color on the American flag helmet. This is one of my own personal inspirations in photography and a very iconic image that has been re made or copied multiple times by many photographers. They way you depicted it in a new medium altogether as a drawing flatters it in such a perfect way. I had trouble taking my eye away from this one to look at the rest. When I did though I say many other amazing works that blow my mind as well. Your ink design with the vertical lines running though it and then the roses surrounded by what look like brick patterns are both amazing as well. The use of space and the abstract ways you presented your style in each piece really help personify your style as your own. I feel like you need to work on the more realistic side, even though this obviously not your forte it helps to have that as a perspective. Your perspectives (which I keep repeating and failed to do even in my own) need a stronger black to help further define objects. I am also very confused by the the splatted like ink piece next to the hand in the last picture. This is mainly out of personal interest but I want something more out of it, something a little more tangible. Overall I found your work very expressive and complex. Good job.
I really love the way that every piece you do is so creative and fun. Your Uncle Sam hat is great because of the dark darks and it makes the red white and blue really pop. You also show great texture in that first project we did with your charcoal leaf. I also really like your abstract pieces the longer ink splatter is really interesting and I like how it has bigger splatters at the top and trickles down getting smaller and smaller. I also like how you mix mediums like ink and charcoal and even Xerox and drawing. I think that your presentation is very neat and clean but I think it would add to your abstract work if you were more playful with your matting. I also like that you use the tape borders on allot of your work to make them have clean boarders. Great work good job!
Claire, I love your abstract pieces! That's something that I struggle with in my work, so it's really inspiring to see it in your pieces. I love your attention to lights and darks in your work. It gives a life and movement to your work that would otherwise not be there. There is so much life in your work. I also really like how you mix your mediums, even with xeroxed copies and stuff like that. I especially like the ink one that's horizontal with all the curly lines coming down. It would look great in my house! Haha. I would love to see more pieces that aren't abstract though. It would be cool to see that quality of your style to go into more realistic things. Like the girl. Also, just paying as much attention to lights and darks in your pencil work as you did in your other work. Overall really good!
I like how you add colors and other tiny elements to make your drawings look unordinary. One example of this is the drawing with all of the little white squares on it, and dark shaded lines over it. The dark lines almost look like flowers or something. I think it could look cool if the dark lines were shaped more like flowers or waves, to put a little design over the simple background. I think my favorite drawing of yours is the one of the hand reaching out of the black hole. It looks as thought the hand is drowning and it is attempting to grab onto a tree for survival. I like how the hand is far bigger than the thing on the side of the frame, it makes the hand more emphasized and more important. The black hole looks as though it is spinning inwards, and getting darker and darker towards the middle. The red on the fingertip reminds the viewer of blood, which further enforces the idea of the hand being helpless and suffering. The blood makes it seem like the hand is about to go into the black hole and perish. I am not sure whether the picture would look better or not if the hand was more detailed. Nicky
I really love your abstract pieces! I think my favorite is the very long-vertical one with the ink trees(?) I wish I had your command of ink. I also love all the interesting ideas on your portfolio. You draw things that would never occur to me to draw. I think your pieces could have been presented slightly better. Just adding some room between the different pieces would have made a huge difference. I also think that at some point you should try to draw more from everyday life, since you seem to have a very good grasp on the abstract. I really like the drawing of the hand... It makes me think of a man/woman that might have fallen into a black hole. And the dash of red on it really makes me feel a bit sad, I’m not sure why. As if the person that had fallen in got hurt trying to escape and eventually gave up. I also really like the picture directly to the left of that one. I am not clear as to what the drawing is based off or anything, but I love the chaos of it. When you see the hand one and this one next to the other, they offer a very interesting contrast. Nice work! -Valeria
I love how your work with texture in your compositions. The vertical ink piece and the pencil piece with the flower form and boxes, I think are your strongest pieces. The abstract forms and simplistic shapes are well thought our and placed within the composition to form a sense of balance. Overall, your pieces show that you have a good sense of composition. I like how your final pieces utilize the entire space and recognize the dimensions of the paper as a part of the concept. For the charcoal figure drawings I think it would be better to work larger so as to help render the details on a larger scale, rather then having to struggle with controlling the charcoal on a small scale. I think by working larger you'll then be able to render hands easier. Also, with the pencil perspective drawings try incorporating softer pencils to broaden the value scale. Just an idea, but maybe you could try incorporating your unique work with textures into your still life pieces to abstract them. Your work with design is really strong, I think that would be interesting to see how you could play with that in rendering still life.
Claire, I really enjoy your portfolio! I love the piece of the the girl holding the american flag helmet with the sun shining past her, and then the conversion you drew of the helmet looking into the sun. I thought that was so creative and I loved the use of color! Also, I really like the vertical abstract drawing. I like the design and how it is rectangularly shaped. I think its very unique and different from all the works that other people did. You did a great job using different medias, such as pencil, charcoal, and ink, and you did a good job spending time on your work and making them look presentable! One thing you could work on is paying close attention to proportions. In the figure drawing and the drawing of the inside of the room, some proportions look a little off balance or out of place. Also, in some of your drawings you might try shading a little bit darker to show the three dimensional element of the drawing. For example, maybe shading the ground around the table and chair in the interior drawing could strengthen it. Lastly, you might also try using your negative space a little bit more and adding to it. Otherwise, Great job!! -Ashley
Claire, Your work is really cool. One of my favorites is the one to the left of your figure drawings. It looks like cobble stone and it gets thicker in the middle and then darker and it almost looks like a rose. It is kind of mysterious and the placement of it is very interesting.
The one below that drawing is by far my favorite piece of yours. I do not know what it is but it is so cool looking.
Your work with the masterpiece and the inspiration is really interesting. The inspiration has great positioning and my eyes focus on the colored head and I really like it.
The drawing next to it with the hand is mysterious and kind of creepy because I do not know where the hand is coming from and I do not know what is bleeding on top of it but the drawing is really intriguing.
Your style overall is very interesting and there are a few of your drawings that are very inspiring and motivational.
The ones that really popped out at me first were the monster cat looking thing with the spiral lines coming out of it and the black and white pictures with the red white and blue helmet. I liked the ones with eh color because not many people used color in this class so when I see it I freak out! The picture with eh hand and the blood or whatever that is really cool too because the blood is actually red and you know what it is because of that. If it weren’t red then you would not know what it was. I like the picture with the ink, the one with the splatter and smears and how it’s so runny, it looks awesome.
It looks like a few of your pencil drawings got smeared or if they were just meant to look like that, I think it would look better if you made more clean edges and lines. Also, if you had used darker lines it would make everything easier to see, especially from far away. If I remember correctly, I remember the leaf or feather looking not as dark and you can see all the designs in it and it looked really nice and fluffy but it looks like you made it way darker. Maybe I remembering a different persons piece but anyway, if you would have made it a little lighter on that one, it would have looked better. --Colby
Instantly i have a hard time looking away from the pieces with the American flag hat because the way you utilized and situated the color makes them stand out like a light in dark. I love the one with color and light streaking across. Your skill with abstract is apparent and you have a style totally unique which stands out on its own. I particularly like your works with ink because though they look chaotic a a glance, i see them as being more about flow the longer i look at them. The charcoal leaf up close almost appears to be engulfed in black flames, which is a technique i think is really interesting. Though your abstract pieces are definitely the stand outs in my eyes that's not to say than you lack skill in realism. Your observational drawing of the room and your clothed figure drawing are well done as well.
So maybe working with more drawings in the realm of realism would help round out your skill even more. As well as maybe some realistic things from your imagination (if that even makes sense). Really enjoyed seeing your work this term, Keep it up!
