I really like your portraits. Although they may not look like the people you intended, I think they're good visually. I like your use of dark values in them. The darkness of the lips of Marilyn Monroe really makes them stand out as the focal point. You used the charcoal medium well in the piece, for shading and line, as well as in the figures. I like your take on perspective. The picture of under the table and the still life are very interesting perspectives you don't see every day. Your shading on the still life captures the lighting really well and it reads well from a distance. I think your under the table picture could be helped by developing it further. As it is, it's a little difficult to tell what it is. You could try experimenting with line weight and shading to create depth, maybe develop the foreground in more detail and make more of a difference in value between the chair and the books behind it. I would also suggest trying variations in size and shape of the paper you work with. Most of your pieces are square and of similar size. I like your experiments with shape, like the figure and the robot. I also really love the humor in your pieces. The robot is cute and funny and I love the banana story! Also, the expression on the figure is really interesting. It makes you think, "What's she looking at??" I like the rotated matting of the banana, too, I think it adds to the fun feeling. It might be even better, though, if you had a smaller brown mat on the black one to break up some of the empty black space on the mat. Don't be so hard on yourself! I know drawing's not your focus, but I think you could have a lot of fun with it if you let yourself play with it and not worry that it looks bad.
I managed to read Kelsey’s last paragraph as I was scrolling down to type, and I have to agree with her. Don’t be so hard on yourself! Some of the work you did in class was great, but you made it sound like it was terrible...
I really love the portraits. The picture of Marylin Monroe, even if it doesn’t look like her much, is great. It is very interesting to look at, and almost entrancing. The composition of it is great and the different shades of black in the picture really make it work. The portrait of your friend even greater, I think it is fantastic. All the dark black of the hair piece and beard contrast very well with the skin color and texture, the two different eyes make for an interesting face and that makes it look very much like a Van Gogh painting. I also loved the streaking banana, the concept is so clever, and the piece was simple and well executed. I think you’re pretty good at making strong lines, but struggle a bit when the subject matter has curves. I think your figure modeling one could have a bit more curvy lines and more shading. I also, really liked your robot. The heart on the chest was a particular nice touch. I like how clever your concepts are in general. I think it is mostly you getting in the way of yourself with your own negative criticisms of your work =)
You have a eery interesting style, considerably different from what I have seen thus far. The over all portfolio is good. I can see that all your pieces fit together. The first piece that stands out is the quarter moon base like drawing. I like the shades of darkness on it. I can see a well defined shape and a shadow like effect on it. I would like to see more of this gradient line work on other pieces. The box still life would have benefited from this. The ink work on the face portrait is awesome. Appealing and the texture is good. It is extreme blacks and whites on each face which makes them better as a piece. The comedic element of the banana is excellent. Biggest change would be to play with shades. good job!
I truly enjoy the personality you bring to your work. The characters are so fun and lively. You even drew the model with a look of uncertainty on her face. That is the most successful part of your work. Having the ability to turn a pile of boxes into a dancing robot is not something everyone can do. I wish you could have shown more drawings with the same creative silliness. It's really fun to look at. One thing that could be improved upon is the use of shading and expanding the range of values utilized in the drawings. Giving the work just a little depth would keep the viewer in the frame longer and allow them to really gaze upon the characters you have created.
Your portraits are my favorite. They stand out amongst all of your other works, and the warped quality of them remind me of Picasso. You have a great style and I think that rather than focusing so much on the fact that it doesn't "turn out like it's supposed to," perhaps focus on the unique awesome style that you have created. It's cool. Play with it and even let it be weirder. I think it has a really attractive quality to it and people are often interested in imperfection. You could use more detail, but I think that could come as long as you stay interested in your piece. It seems that you got bored with a few of the works and if you found something that truly attracted you, you could just go crazy.
You do not give yourself enough credit for you artistic abilities. You have a very distinct and desirable style that I think comes out clearest in your portraits, as previously stated over and over again.
This varying images of the man and the woman, though morphed and not exactly as they were to appear in reality are clear depictions at the same time. Right away myself and others I am sure were aware that the woman was Marilyn Monroe, that alone expresses that you were right on target.
In addition to that I love that you work very heavy and dark. your hues are very pure which is where most of the feeling comes.
Not only was the Banana piece very comical but you also used an awesome perspective when it came to working in the library. I think that you have a fun very distinct style that is over laid with a heavy satire.
I think exploring more areas of shading and depth could add to some of your pieces as you did in the still life. If you combined your heavy hand of hue in your comical pieces you would really be on to something.
Furthermore some attention to detail could add to your images as well, and a slight more attention to the presentation.
All in all I think your work is great and your fabio too :)
I really enjoy the style that you have with your artwork. Each piece has a cartoonish feeling to it and is very unique to your style. I like the two portraits of the faces and how they aren't realistic, yet still capture my attention. I like the twist that they have which sets them aside from the original pictures you were drawing. Also, i LOVE the banana drawing because i think it's hilarious how its running out of it's peel. I think you depict a sense of humor through your art and I really like that. I really like the way you matted your work in different shapes and sizes to give each piece it's own personality. Maybe to strengthen your work, you could shade a little more to add depth to your pictures. for example, your picture of the figure drawing could be enhanced by shading the shadows to show curves in her body due to the way shes laying. Also, you could try to draw more abstract pieces to create variety. Lastly, you could enhance some of your work by darkening your lines to make the pictures stand out more. Good work this term!! -Ashley
Your perspectives piece is great! The point of view is very creative and you rendered it very well using pencil. I would have to also agree with everyone else in saying that your portrait pieces have more interest to me in the fact that you added your own personal artistic touch. As individual artists there are no rules as to what is the perfect way to render life. I personally believe that art is all about the experimentation with the reality that we see/perceive. So great work in bringing in your own humor and perspectives! To give some critique, I would advise stretching the spectrum of shades in your pieces. Using a softer pencil will give you darker lines. I would also like to see you work with more ink. I think the finite characteristic of ink will let you be more relaxed and playful with your drawings and not worry so much about the perfection of your art. Once the ink is on the page, it's hard to cover it up. So enjoy your mistakes, it's how we discover! I hope you'll continue to keep alive the artistic energy, your art has great personality.
I like the carefree humor in most of your drawings. Your drawings have a humor that is similar to that of notebook sketches during class, but they are more detailed and matted so that the drawings look more professional. The Marilyn Monroe drawing is particularly good because it looks sort of abnormal and stretched out, but you can still recognize that it is Marilyn Monroe. I just think that it could look better if you made her hair more apparent in the frame; either by making the head smaller, or making it look more like hair. I think that the streaking banana is the funniest drawing. The movement of the banana with regard to the falling banana peel represents the motion of the drawing perfectly. With more shading in the drawing, the motion of the banana could be even more apparent. I really like how you used different viewing angles in the drawings. I like this especially in the drawing of the table and the chair, from the angle of below the table. It looks at though you are sitting on the ground right in front of the table, looking forward. Emphasizing the shadows in this picture as well could make the image look more realistic. Nicky
Jordan You defiantly have a very identifiable style. The abstractness in your work gives it a cool twist that is not really expected. That also brings a weird emotion to every piece that though you can’t describe it, but it really works. My favorite being that of Marilyn Monroe I feel that though weird it is really interesting and eye catching I cant help but look at it. My advice would be, have fun and keep going out of the box. The most interesting pieces that you create are the ones where you are having the most fun with because you put the most emotion into them. Don’t worry so much with what your work looks like. Be a very confident in your work. You did a great job!
Your style all year was a blast to watch. When we were putting up pictures for critiques throughout the term, I couldn’t wait to see what you had to put up because of your comical, humorous style. Definitely my favorite of your pieces of work is the picture of the streaking banana. Just the idea about it and your creativity made that picture so great. I also really like your portraits, the only thing I would change would be the lady’s nose, and the guy’s right eye ball. Other than that they look good. In some of your other drawings with pencil, I think that you could use some darker lines and shades throughout the pieces because of how lightly drawn they are. I would also try to keep better care of your pieces because they don’t look very professional being all wrinkled up on the wall. Other than that, your work all term has definitely improved from not knowing anything about drawing, and it has been a pleasure to work with you and kick it this term.
Jordan, I really like your quirky style. I think it's a style that can't be faked and you definitely have it, so you should definitely go with it. I love your portraits and all the character that they have in them. I also really like how you can see a difference in your work throughout the term. You really got comfortable with your style and with the materials that we used. I also like your figures and how you tried to make them more abstract and cubism-y. They just look really fun and interesting. Some critiques would be to take better care of your work, and presenting it better. Also maybe play around with the thickness of lines and the way that light interacts with the subjects that your drawing. It would be cool to see that paired with the loose, quirky style that you have. Also, have confidence in your work! You have a talent for drawing and making the things you see appear on paper even more interesting and intriguing. Good stuff!
You say that you are not good with drawing faces but out of everyone’s in the class I thought your face drawings were the most interesting because they had character. Especially the Marilyn Monroe portrait. I knew exactly whom you were drawing and I am so glad that you put this in there. You changed the famous portrait of her in a good way.
Also I admired the portrait below it because it was comical. The eyes are different sizes and the beard and the hair are like they are one. You said that you messed up but I think the mistakes are really what make up someone’s work.
You have a distinct style because it was different from everyone else in the class. You would be a great comic artist for sure.
My favorite piece was the robot boxes. I totally know what you meant when you said you were getting bored with drawing boxes. Adding the robot gadgets to it was an awesome idea.
And last but not least, the banana. He is so silly and he’s running naked. I’m glad that you were careful with how you drew his butt because otherwise it would have looked a little… weird.
You have a unique style to your drawings of people. I like it because its so different then everyone else. Its like you aren’t trying to make it the realistic looking person and you are trying to make it look more abstract. My favorite is probably the guy at the bottom with the Elvis looking hair and one eye bigger than the other. It makes me laugh just like the streaking banana. The “First love” picture is pretty cool too. I’m not sure what they are, maybe the ghosts from pac-man?
I think the thing you can work on is shading. It looks like you used a lot of pencil and I think if you would use charcoal it would help you a lot with shading. The brown matting helps but I think you can work with using more color. There really isn’t any different shade of grey or color in your pictures except for the Elvis hair guy. It would help if you used more dark shades and color. Nice Job! --Colby
To me your style comes of as a mix of cartoon-ism and abstract blended together with satire. I particular like the Marilyn Monroe because i can still tell what it is a little distorted giving it kind of a creepy Micheal Jackson from beyond the grave look (but maybe that's just me). Regardless i like that along with your other portraits and characters including the infamously inappropriate banana and his destructive drinking habits (moonshine will sneak up on you especially if your a fruit). Like the "first love" with the broken skateboard, and am still in awe at how much talent you have for boarding, keep it up!
I would suggest really spending time doing observational figure drawing just because i think it would be a good skill to hone and it is the hardest theing in my opinion. Being able to do realism as well as your abstract would really progress you further as an artist. Good Stuff.
First I want to say that I love the portrait drawing you did! I know you said you thought you messed them up or something but I love them! The one of the man is my favorite because it’s so unique. The day we critique for these portrait photos I could not take my eyes off of the man. I really like how his sideburn goes all the way down his face and how odd looking his face is, it’s wonderful! I also really like the banana and how its framed. I also really like your figure drawings and how odd the shape of her body is, something about it really draws me in. Whether it was on purpose or not it’s a unique take on the human figure and I think it works really well. I really like how you took an abstract approach to your drawings. An example is how you created a robot out of the still life boxes. I like how you took something boring and created something fun and unique. For a critique I would suggest blending more in your still life/ interior photos. I would also like to see you use darker tones in contrast to the light in these drawings to make the figures stand out and give it more of a finished look. Overall I really enjoyed your work this term, your drawings take on interesting perspectives and are different then everyone else in the class. I really like the content you used and how you experimented with each piece.
