  1. Despite the daunting task of rendering a live figure, it's admirable that you used ink. In my opinion this shows a sort of audacity to experiment regardless of mistakes you may make. I especially enjoy how you layered the ink to create gradients in the nature inspiration piece. It's also fun to see the variation of styles from the colored characters to the well-rendered still life. In the figure drawings I would suggest stretching the spectrum of shades even further with the ink. Although you do have gradients, it still remains on the rather dark side. Also, there is a tendency for your figures to be cut off the page awkwardly. I would suggest planning how your figure will take up the page, so as to then determine how big you need to draw the head. Rather than draw the head first and then run out of room for the rest of the body. However, I think the figure drawn with white on brown paper exemplifies good composition. The body takes up the page while the angles of the lines lets the eye move within the piece rather than off the page.

  2. The use of color on your drawn make them stand out this is something good and you should do it more often throughout. I particularly enjoy the subtle lines on the marionette drawing. Also Rendering on the bottles is very good. The different depth you put on the bottles makes it realistic. I think there is also the point that your drawing looks continuos to life. In other words you can picture the image on real life. In contrast to your drawings of the human body where it can look a bit chopped. Maybe some attention to cropping or analysis to where your subject will go in the paper would help. Over all your drawings are good.

  3. I am very impressed with your drawings of humans. The quick gesture drawings and the detailed drawings of the puppet like women are different yet intriguing. I think you do a beautiful job of capturing the human body in different ways and your work is very realistic and proportional. Also, I like how you bring other colors into your drawings to add an element of surprise to your portfolio. You execute shading very nicely, which brings your work to life and gives it personality. Your drawings mainly have a serious feel to them, however you added a funny cartoon-like picture with color that lightened up the mood, which I thought was good. Also, you work looks very clean and professionally presented. I would try to maybe add more abstract drawings into your portfolio. It looks like you like to draw tightly rendered and realistic, which you do well. But to make you portfolio more diverse, try loosening up and drawing more abstract and outside of your comfort zone. Also, you could work on drawing more still life, instead of humans, to make your portfolio look less repetitious. However, i think you did a great job and im impressed with your work!!

  4. I really like the variety of your portfolio. Every piece is very different from the other pieces. I really enjoy the ink piece with the yellow sky. It makes it look sort of like cartoon/comic-strip, and it is very dramatic. I also like the water and how the fine lines are drawn to make it look like water. It makes me think of Van Gogh. I also enjoy the other piece that has color in it, the one with the childhood characters. It makes me think of Alice in Wonderland. It is very detailed and a bit bizzarre. I like how fine the lines are and the composition of this piece. I think the main criticism I would have for you would be angles of certain things. For example, in your copy of the masterpiece the main figure seems to be standing up taller than in the original (rather than pushing her pelvis out.) Same with the figure drawings. I think some of your work could have been improved slightly by paying a bit more attention to proportions and angles. I really enjoyed your picture of the feather. The shading and border made it pop out of the wall for me. My eye was instantly drawn to it. Your composition is also great, on this piece and on the others.

  5. All of your drawings have different styles, and are appealing in different ways. I was particularly attracted to the drawing you copied of the person connected to strings. The drawing looks very similar to the inspiration, but it is more spread out, which I think makes it look better. Yours looks much more detailed than the original, while also looking much softer. I think it seems meaningful or symbolic on the top drawing, where the figure seems to be looking upward and reaching out. It looks like the figure is looking and reaching for help, which reinforces the whole theme of it being supported by string and sticks. The desert setting in the background also makes the figure look more barren. Another drawing I was attracted to was the one of the person sitting on the bench. The different medias gives a good perception of depth. The pen river makes the rock and branch appear closer, while the trees appear farther away. The pen river flows very well, and almost looks like old Asian art or something. The only critique I have for this drawing is that it could look more finished and confined if it was matted on a dark paper.

  6. I really like your drawings. There is a fun looseness to them. Very playful. I really like the drawing of the person on the log. The water is so graphic and lively. I also like the use of the yellow in the sky. I remember the the critique when you hung this piece on the wall. It stood out to me as being one of the shiners. I also really like the figure drawing where the lady is lying on her side with the quick sketch above. So good. The only criticism I would give is in your masterpiece drawing you seemed to tighten up a bit. I know you have already stated this to yourself, but I think that it is worth reiterating. The drawings are great but they lose that playful nature which sings in the rest of your work.

  7. Rebecca!

Maybe you don't know my name, as I don't for many persons in the class, but I am the one who wants and will follow thru with buying one of your images. With this said it is clear that there is an aspect about your work that I truly admire.

To begin, your varying control of multiple mediums is present throughout your portfolio. The pencil image of the bottle I would say is when you really started to show your abilities. this images takes great care of texture, depth, and framing. Equally, however i feel that varying tonal rages would have elevated this piece. I do love the image but feel there could be a little more pizzaz with darker darks and lighter lights. Furthermore, I would really like to see multiple bottles different angle and emphasizes on each one. Ultimately, this image is a great start to a series!

Furthermore, I love the way you work with the figure! You have a method of making the typical figure malleable while simultaneously creating soft and strong figures. the puppet image is a great example of this, this person is very round and nearly tangible on the page, while also portraying a strong independent figure, which is ironic considering the puppet aspect of the piece.

I think that is what i love most about your work, it creates these ironic and fun depictions of persons and things.

Furthermore, I really envy your ability to draw water in the manner that you did with the young boy over the river. i have been trying to do this for a while and love that you were able to create movement as you did.

However, i also thin k that this image could benefit from more color maybe, or less yellow in the sky, or maybe more color variation in the sky? I am not sure but I want something more even though the image itself is stunning.

The only other thing that I think would really elevate your work would be a unification through similar matting. Presentation has the ability to do many things and evoke many feelings depending on the manner in which it is dealt.

Overall, nicely done, I truly admire your work!

  8. I love your style! It's so fun and whimsical, but also really realistic and full. I think you have a talent for bringing those two things together that makes your work really awesome to look at. I really like your use of color especially in the one with the boy over the river. I love how you made it really loose and free, but then used an incredible amount of detail in the water. Very effective. That drawing makes me think of summer when I was little. :) Your pieces just make me really happy, and I think that you communicate joy really well in your work.
Some critiques would be paying more attention to composition in your figure drawings. Also, experimenting more with light and dark areas in your pieces. Making the lights lighter and the darks darker and playing around with all of the shades in between would really add a lot to your presentation.
I would love to see more landscapes in your work!
Overall one of my favorites. :)

I really enjoy your work. I remember being consistently impressed by all your pieces through out the term. My favorite piece you have put on display is the one with the boy on the tree branch. I think that the amount of detail and time you had to put into this is impressive. Every brush stroke for the water is perfect. The detail in the background is well done but doesn’t take away from the subject. I even like the yellow background because I think most people would have used a blue. Your figure drawing is both realistic and proportional. I also
My biggest advice I is allot of your pieces are very similar. You have a lot of figures up and not much of anything else. I think next time show more of the range of your work. Other then that your work is great and well done!

  10. I love how imaginative and fun your drawings are. Your take on figures is intriguing and creative. I really enjoy the marionette image. Its composition is wonderful in the placement of the figures, their poses and the strings. They create a good sense of balance. I also like the contrast of the back and front and the small red additions.
I really like your masterpiece assignment. I like that you brought more personality and identity to the faceless, genderless figure. You bring a lot of emotion to your work and it comes across well. I might add some more to the background to add a little more interest.
Your piece of the boy(?) over the water is also very imaginative and interesting. I love your use of different media and different line weight. I LOVE how you play with flowing lines in the water. However, I would maybe try variations on this to show depth of field, varying the weight and spacing; maybe more spread out and thicker in the foreground leading to the very small that you have in the furthest reaches of the water.
You use the media well, with a good variety of lights and darks. One suggestion, though, would be to lighten some of the figure pieces. You shade well, but I think you could get a fuller range of tones in those images and capture the musculature and subtleties of the human form a little bit better.
In all, very good, creative and well-composed! I love the emotion in your work and your pieces look fully developed and professional.

  11. It goes without saying that your "Dali-esque" piece is without a doubt a masterpiece. I found it quite amazing that you were able to make ink work so well with you, and even while figure drawing you went to using ink and made it work so well. The very bottom photo of the figure and river in ink are both ones I had to make a double take on to fully realize that they were ink and not charcoal. You have the ability to really personify your works with a very unique style. I truly enjoy looking at each and every one of the works you created as the final portfolio. The very versatile way you go from figure, to landscape, to abstract show that you have a well rounded perception to make any piece become a true expression.
I want to see more of the working with white on brown like the figure drawing in the last picture. I want to see the finished product of the Alice in wonderland like piece in the first picture and am curious as to why you never finished it. Back to the more use of white charcoal on brown paper is I want to see more work with other media in general. I see that you have other works but it is quite obvious that ink was your string suit, show me more! However, altogether an amazing set.

  12. Your work throughout the term has been a pleasure to look at. One of my favorite pieces by anybody throughout the term is the picture of the person sitting on the branch hanging over the river. The attention to detail is ridiculous and I really like the usage of different mediums in the piece. I also really like the use of the yellow ink in the sky, it really gives it a different feel and an almost a sunsetty type of environment. I also really like your figure drawings. They are very well done and the shading is great. It really shows the lighting that you wanted to portray in the picture and I also like how you gave them a background, even though the whole page isn’t filled up, it still gives it a place, rather than just floating around there.
All of your pieces could have benefited from being matted, but your overall presentation is still very nice. I really enjoyed your style throughout the term and hope you keep drawing! Good work this term.

  13. Your best piece is definitely the one of the kid sitting on the log over the water. I love this one because the water looks really cool. The lines that make the water look sort of out of place just because there aren’t any other lines like it in the picture but that is why it looks so good. The water looks really cool and you can really tell the movement of it. Your style is very unique. I didn’t see anyone else do that before. I also liked the one with the color in it because there was actually color. There were few people who actually used color for their pieces in this class so I liked that. I also liked the sprinkler flow bell because it made your art look even better! Haha I actually did like the picture to the right of that of the bottles because they look so realistic.

I couldn’t really think of anything to say that would help you out except maybe instead of keeping the bodies completely white in the middle, maybe shade in there more and it would look better.

  14. Rebecca, I really like your style of drawing. I can easily identify your work every time we had a critique. I have noticed that you are really good at drawing people. As you mentioned during class last Tuesday, you tend to draw life and that is very evident in your work. The drawing with the wine bottles in remarkable to me in that there is not one person in it at all, yet you were able to add life to it. There is depth to your shading as well that really adds to the drawing.

My favorite drawing of yours is the one with color. I can see that you like color and towards the end of the term you integrated color into your work. The one with the figures is so playful and when I saw it made me smile. It is the same with the drawing with the yellow sky. It is a little creepy in ways because it reminds me of the Nightmare before Christmas. I really liked that movie when I was little so this drawing really appealed to me.

My favorite black and white drawing of yours is the one that was set below the colored drawing. The texture and shading of it is amazing and it adds mystery to it.

    Awesome job, Rebecca.

  15. The versatility in which you can work is made evident in these pieces. From the carefully rendered still life and figure drawings to the fanciful drawings using color. Particularly i was blown away by the whimsical scene of the figure overlooking the river. The water itself becomes its own entity and the trees fade out into lighter shades as the yellow glow encases them. This along with the fun children s drawing are good examples of using color to selectively highlight. Your still lives are equally interesting and well done as your creative pieces, and i think you do an excellent job of depiction the female body. One of my favorite works of yours is the two woman being showed as marionette puppets. It is an interesting work who's meaning runs so much deeper than than the paper it was composed upon.

My only critique would be to try and go a little darker and create a piece with really intense shading and lines. Great job.

  16. I love your work and integration of color. You explore the various mediums and styles well. The animal tea party is charming is a child-like way. It is so playful with the color, expressions of the characters and composition around the table. It is very free but then you show your ability for detail and a completely different style in your masterpiece compositions. Those are very edgy, sharp and professional. The distortion and subject matter shows a whole different side of your work. You switch back to a light and playful side in your ink piece. I like your combination of materials as well. The fine lines that create the water stand out very well against the dark ink. I feel the same way about the marionette piece as your masterpiece. It has a darkness with out being overwhelming. I would like to see that translated into your still life works. Your others have a strong vibrant life and energy, let that show in everything you do. I would love to see some of your style translated into abstract work. You play well with all of the materials and your compositions look very finished. It’s very enjoyable to look at.

  17. Rebecca- Your portfolio has some great figure drawings, the model drawings and well as the master piece assignment are really nicely rendered. The model drawings are especially well done, the poses seem natural and the shading is really effective. I think the two where the model is lying down could use borders or maybe just some texture or value in the background, to finish them off. As mentioned earlier the masterpiece assignment is a personal favorite, especially because Dali’s style is so hard to duplicate. The top drawing captures the value changes and form exceptionally well even without color. It would be interesting to see you try and draw a completely different scene, still with Dali’s crazy style, just something less similar to let more of your creativity flow. However, the detail shown by this particular assignment to make it so similar to the original is very impressive. One particular piece that stood out to me was the white model sketch on brown paper. It is clearly a sketch, but I think you could have experimented with the white conte more and found some success. Your other work shows a great sense of shading and value contrasts, so it would be cool to see you try and get those effects from a completely opposite medium.

  18. I love how whimsical and playful many of your pieces are. I also love how you used color in some of your pieces! Your Dali drawing is beautiful, I love the curvature of the lines and how it flows so well, I think that was a great piece for you to choose to remake because it really allowed you to show your talents. My favorite might be the one with the little girl and boy and the monsters. I just love your style and the shape and overall composition of this drawing. It looks surreal like a fairy tale or Alice in Wonderland or some magical story. The use of color was very well done as well in this piece. Your drawing of the two “puppet” women is amazing, I love how you shaded and used color. This piece stands out to me because of how you experimented with shading and line use, it is abstract yet so right realistic, I love how you played with abstracting your work. For a critique I would like to have seen more variation in the sizes and shapes of your pieces (something I didn’t do myself) because I think it might make some of your pieces stand out from one another more and it would make the presentation somewhat more exciting. Also framing each piece may have made the presentation a bit more professional and finished looking. Overall you used the space of each page very well, I love the shapes of the lines you used, shading and how you made each piece playful. I really enjoyed your work this term, keep it up!
