I really enjoy what you choose to be the subjects of your pieces. The way you simplify your compositions makes your work even more so intriguing. I would have to say that my favorite piece from your portfolio is the box character throwing the axe. The action is well rendered and the shading captures the light really well. Your figure drawing is great as well. The attention to darkness and lightness of line making aids in capturing where the light lands and the shadows fall. One critique would be that your work tends to be too light. So, maybe it would help, while you are working on your drawings, if you take a break and step back to see if there are areas need to be darkened. Furthermore, I think it would benefit your work if you stretched the spectrum of your shades to a wider range of grades.
I really like your portfolio. I think its very unique and consistently impressive. Your style of work is evident by looking at your portfolio, yet it also has a lot of variety. I think your storyboard is hilarious, and the storyline is very clear from your work. i like the way you chose to tear your paper instead of cut straight edges. I think that was very unique and it brought more personality to your works. I also like the way your portfolio is presented because its organized and professional. Something to work on would be making your lines darker in certain areas. You draw very faintly so sometimes its hard to see your work. However, your work is so good that darker lines would make it stand out better. Also, you might try shading a little more. Some of your images look a little but flat, like your interior drawing. So shading would help make them look three dimensional. Lastly, working on the proportion of the woman's body might help it look a little more realistic. Great work though I really enjoy this portfolio! -Ashley
You work is very clever. I know that you used a variety of media and still has a style and signature that shows its you work. Presentation of all the images is very nice. they look as if they were ripped from reality and framed. The drawing them selfs are great observations of detail. I recall the evolution of the pinecone drawing. into what it is shown in your portfolio. the image is simple and compelling. And the you have the drawing of the cubic person. with the different levels of shading. It is really interesting. Ink work is also nice, the different shades make a smooth feature on paper. this is a contrast to your pencil work where you emphasize sharp lines. They both are good good, I would be interested on seeing a reverse effect. Sharp ink lines and soft pencil work. Good Job
I love the presentation of all of your pieces. I also admire how detailed all of your pieces are. I think the main criticism I have for you would be to use darker lines. Some of the shading in your pieces is sometimes too light to see, but it is actually very well executed. So maybe a bit more pressure (or a different pencil?) would be beneficial. I particularly enjoyed the robot/box little guy, though I think that the piece could have been a bit bigger and with less white space. I think my favorite part of your portfolio was your story board. The composition of all the panels was great, the story was simple but easy to follow. I think I would have put a bit less sparks on panel 4 5 and 6, but not by much. The shading was and use of charcoal was excellent for this. I absolutely love panel 7, the amount of detail, the lines, the composition, the background... everything works well. I also liked the drawing of the blanket, it looks so real! The placement of every line makes it seem so natural. The shading of this piece is excellent as well, just by the shading we can see the corner of the table underneath the blanket. It is so simple, but very well executed. I really enjoy your style in general! -Valeria
I think you have that "something" that is really important for an artist to have. By that "something" what do I mean, shoot I am not really sure but it is what comes out in your work. You are very soft spoken and quiet, and yet with the last piece, that of working with the masterpiece, you went bold, and I'm still trying to figure it out.
You work well with light mediums. Your work has a bold softness which is ultimately a contradiction and it is not only evident in the medium, but also in the subject matter. At first one would assume you really enjoy shapes, considering the utilization of squares and rectangles as figures, but they are always depicted as personifications that give something to the pieces, usually the feeling of curiosity.
I think that is the overall theme evident in almost all of your pieces, there is a curiosity that draws one in.
With this said and definitely praised, I cannot say that I would not love to see something on the other side of the spectrum, an image bold in meaning and medium. An image with tonal variation and compliment.
Overall, I truly enjoyed and was extremely intrigued by your work this term, nicely done!
Paul, Your work is very simple and straightforward, which makes it nice to look at. I really like the piece of the robot and the axe. Your shading and composition is really great and gives it almost a computer animation feel. I really like the lightness of your work, with the shading and lines and cleanness. I also really enjoy your composition, especially in the room one, it makes you curious and really tells a story about the room. But I would also like to see more variety in the tones of your pieces. I would love to see you just go all out with super dark charcoal in a crazy rendering of something. It would be a nice addition and would show your versatility. Very nice portfolio. :) -Joanna Dahl
Your portfolio is fun. The robot is my favorite, I love the simplicity of it. If you would have added extra shading/detail it would be a less effective piece. It makes me feel lonely and as if the robot is in a barren landscape (Wall-E perhaps?) Though you didn't include much shading in the robot piece, you are still very talented in shaded other works. I am very impressed by the shading in your story board series. Super! I would like to see a little more variation in your work. Maybe include a few different styles or mediums. They are look pretty similar and I feel like you have the potential to do a lot of different styles. You could be an amazing cartoonist!
My favorite drawing of yours is the top right one of the block man, cutting wood. The greatest part of it is the dark shading on the figures left side of its body. You did a good job making sure that if there was a light shining on the figure from it’s right side, every part of its body that would be shaded is dark. The barrenness of the picture is also very appealing to me. The fact that this block man is using an axe in the middle of an empty white space, make you think that he could be in another dimension, or something. The only critique I have for this drawing is that the figure’s reflection on the ground could be a little more emphasized. I really like your sequence drawings as well. The tone of shading in the drawings makes them look really soft, but also detailed. The shadows of the lighters give a good depth perception, and the light coming off the fire from the lighter illuminates the flame. I understand the sequence up until the second to last drawing. Why would the frame be dark right after the lighters meet, and both spark flames. Nicky
I really like the subtle animation in your work. This is particularly evident in your lighter story, your robot and your fun ink experiments. My favorite piece is either the robot or the pine cone. I really like the compositions of both images. The pine cone is an interesting abstraction and it reminds me a little bit of an armadillo or some kind of scaled dinosaur. I really like your use of texture and line in it; I think you have a good balance of white space, too. I really like the robot because you capture so much emotion in such a simple form. When I first saw it, though, I thought it was a robot reaching out to another robotic form, maybe a dog or smaller robot. I like the idea of it reaching for an axe, but I think I almost like my interpretation better! That's what's neat about it, though, that you leave it up to interpretation. I really like the shape of the paper, too. One criticism I have it that most of your pieces are very light. I really like how this turned out in the robot, but I think many of your other pieces could be further developed. I suggest when you're working, don't stop when you think you should, keep pushing the values and experiment with drawings you don't intend to keep. Also, step back and see how far away you can see what details. Another thing I would suggest would be to experiment with backgrounds. None of your images here seem to have much in the way of backgrounds. Maybe try some abstract shapes or suggestions of backgrounds. One last thing is maybe try different matting types and styles. All your pieces look neat and professional, but there's not a lot of variety. A different color, orientation or layer could help you emphasize particular pieces or specific aspects of a piece. All in all, your work is creative and interesting. I really loved watching your work this term!
Paul First off, I feel you underestimate your self and your drawing capabilities! I enjoy all your work. I really like how detailed you are. All of your work is proportion realistic and out of the box. Your presentation is creative, simple and effective. I think that the block man picture is a great example of this. I also really like the texture in your first drawing of the pinecone. I know that people have been giving you allot of critique on how light your work is, I cant say I disagree with them, it is light. But I still think it is effective. I think instead of worrying about how light or dark something is, maybe focus more on making darker backgrounds. All your work is so white heavy with big backgrounds, With the exception of the lighter story board which I fell is one of my favorite pieces done in the class, it is well executed, has a clear story, presented well, and realistic (besides maybe the fact that the inanimate objects have control of themselves). Over all great job, and one of my favorite portfolios.
I enjoy your strong sense or perception of the up close on many of your works. The story board is so perfect with the constant zooming in and out to show detail and grand scale of the event taking place. You figure drawing in the first picture is phenomenal and very well depicted. I also enjoyed the abstract of the pine cone and how it is so obviously un-obvious. Instead of seeing large picture you had the ability to look at something and pick it out, expose it's very definitive aspects, and then use those as the way in which each subject is defined. I want to see much more boldness in the coloration as opposed to a very light use of the black verses white. Your perspective is interesting but undefined as to why that spot grabbed you the most, why did you chooses this particular spot at the place to which you would use as the final product? Lastly, I would like to see some more ink and some more bold attitude to your subjects in the ink works you did use as a representation.
I really enjoy the simplicity of most of your work. It’s a very unique style, but delivers such a big message. I really like the storyboard of the lighter. I feel like charcoal was your strongest medium you used. The shading and realistic yet cartoony style used really makes this almost your signature piece in my mind. In most of your pencil drawings, they seem really lightly done, and could benefit from darker lines in certain areas, or darker shading. This would have brought the picture more off the page and delivered important pieces of the picture to the viewer. I also would have cut the borders with a razor and a ruler to make them look more professional. I know that they wavy borders were by preference, so that’s good. I also would have matted all of the pieces of work to make them look more professional. Overall though, your style really made looking at your work very interesting because I never really knew what was going to happen. Good work this term.
Okay, first of all, my favorite by far is the box head guy reaching for the axe. From far away it looks so cute. Almost like I want to take the box head guy home, but then I look closer and see what he is picking up and it worries me. It is kind of comical in a way and I remember really liking it when you presented it during class.
Your overall work is great. Your use if shading and how you are able to keep the rest of the paper clean is great. That is very evident in the lighter drawing. I can’t believe that you did that with charcoal. Awesome job. Also, that was a very cute idea.
Another drawing I really admire is the pinecone. It’s very interesting the way you chose to draw it.
My only critique would be that you should try and branch out to draw a little darker. However, your style of drawing is great and if you feel more comfortable drawing lighter than you should do that. I am just suggesting that you step outside of your comfort zone. I know it’s difficult.
I find your work to be subtle and interesting. You have created many strangely fascinating creatures/characters. I particularly like the character made from shapes with the rectangular head. Its as if each of these figures has its own story, what that story is i have no idea, but it creates a sense of mystery that i like. My favorite piece is the room that shows only part of an open window with a curtain blowing, adding on to the theme of mystery. Also your matting is very well done, and all your work is presented well. And though it is drawn very lightly your figure drawing is really nice
I would try to experiment with different and darker shades. Also i feel that working with larger and different scales, perhaps try to draw a landscape or cityscape. Adding or creating a background for your characters could also have an interesting outcome.
The thing I like the best is probably the way you matted everything. I like how unique it looks, with the ripped edges. The works I liked the best were the sheet on the table because it looks so realistic and the robot with the hatchet. Another thing that you did well with was the shading of the storyboard project. Each picture is shaded so perfectly! I don’t get how you people can do that! The other piece that was cool was the one where you drew it exactly how it was then you changed it to how you wanted it. So, it was the farmer and his wife and you changed the pitchfork. That was a good idea. I like the creativity.
There isn’t much that I can see that you can work on except maybe how you shaded on the women. It looks sort of like you just did the drawing really quick and dint spend much time on it. It’s a good outline of a person but if you were to add eyes and maybe some better shading, it would look more realistic. Nice job though! -Colby
Paul- You have a very distinct style, where crisp lines interact with very smooth tones and values. This is captured with your storyboard assignment, which has a great narrative and is really well composed. The spatial interaction between the lighters as well as light to dark contrasts really makes for a complete assignment. The story is easy to follow because of its organization and fits well on the black background with crisp white borders around each frame. Your style is really nice in pencil as long as you focus on drawing with a range of tones and values, when you get too light some of your intricate detail gets passed over. For example, if you had drawn the one where the cloth is over the corner of the table, in charcoal rather than pencil, you may have been able to capture more of the contrast in values. I find it very challenging to draw fabric in pencil, so the quality of your drawing is very impressive. Otherwise, some of your work from outside of class is really humorous. I laughed when I saw your rendition of the masterpiece assignment, subtle yet radical difference between the two versions.
What stood out to me in your work is how precise, neat and meticulous each of your pieces appears. I really like the first piece you did of the pine cone that actually inspired one of the pieces I did for this class with the little squares. You did really well with shading, which is apparent in all of your pieces especially the story board piece. To me your storyboard looks so sharp and smooth, you did a really nice job blending and also making the whites and darks stand out. Another aspect of your work I really enjoyed was how you framed your drawings. My eye was always drawn to this during critique. The one of the robot really stood out to me because of how the paper has a ripped look and has an irregular shape. I think this was very effective and worked well with the content of your piece. While many of your pieces are very neat and detailed, your figure drawing showed how you can also be loose and more flowing which shows you have a wide range of talent. As a critique I would have liked to see you go wilder and make some more abstract pieces that were messy and all over the place, just to see how you would work like this. Also I would have liked you to go darker with some of your pieces because I think you tend to stay fairly light, so I would just like to see more range of boldness and experimentation. I would also like to see more of ink just to see how you would work with that because you are obviously great with pencil and charcoal, I think seeing more ink from you would be interesting and may make you become more abstract and flowing with your pieces. I really love the masterpiece you remade, that’s hilarious! You have a very distinct style and I really like how you used each medium and how you framed each piece, keep it up!
