  1. Your work is very fun and enjoyable. Both in large and small scale. Your work has a lot of details. The story board has a great variety of compositions and perspectives. shading is also diverse and adds to the value of the images.
On your ink images, the animal figures are drawn from simple strokes on the paper, which is imaginative. is whimsical to view them this way. I also like the different vales of darkness on ink. How you give depth with the darkness values.
Im not sure what media your drawing of the tree is. However is a great image, the dark sharp lines define the objects well and there is a fun element with the rain marks on the image.
The details on the library images are very well detailed. they are very well done thumb nails. Good job

  2. I love your portfolio! All the pieces are very polished and look finished. The presentation is great and all of them are varied in subject matter and style. All of your pieces are very interesting Some of them very simple, some of them very intricate and realistic. I really love the salamander? drawing. I think it pops out because of the color, but really is wonderfully done. I also like the piece right next to it a lot. It’s very different and very simple, and the composition works very well. I think my favorite one is the one with the tree, rocks and rain... the shading and the composition really catches my eye. It looks very mysterious. I think you should try to do some more abstract work at some point. Your portfolio is currently very grounded and made out of things that are from real life or alike. I think there’s only 1 or 2 pieces that are abstract. I also think that your figure modeling piece could benefit from some more shadows to make her body less linear. That said, I really enjoyed your work throughout the term =)

  3. I really enjoy the drawing of the stones and the tree. It's striking and very beautiful. I also really enjoyed the drawing of the staircase that was probably left to the floor. The perspective and sense of depth in that drawing was fantastic. Your work is wonderful to look at and very well done. I appreciate your varying mounting techniques and the way you chose to present the work on the wall. It guided the viewer through the work making it feel like a collection instead of a bunch of stand alone drawings. The only critique I can see is that your work seems to deal so much with accurately drawing what you're looking at that it loses the excitement or wonder that the stone and tree drawing has. That image has a magical sense that you can't quite put your finger on. I wish that the rest of the work had that same off kilter aura about it. None the less your drawings are fantastic and very enjoyable to view. Good work.

  4. Your still life drawings are great! The attention to detail on the glass bottles in your story board collection is really proficient. Also, the varying perspectives of the glass bottle as it travels through the story is intriguing and gives the story the range of emotions necessary to convey your intentions. I also really like how you played with the form of the pinecone and the different materials to used to render it. It's also nice to see you stray from the conventional life drawings and explore more of the abstract and imaginary as with the ink drawing of the tree. One critique would be to see more of this sort of relaxed play with your images (like what you did with the pinecone). This also leads into my second suggestion in that you might like to try experimenting with different forms of composition. Rather than have the forms be constricted by the limits of the paper, maybe let your forms play and construe the limits as another prompt for direction and creativity. Regardless, great work!

  5. Kelsey,

Your work is beautiful. The salamander is by far my favorite, perhaps because I'm a biology person but I also love the color and the detail. It is very different from the rest of your work. You have the ability to do so many different styles and you are great at each. The tree is another of my favorites. I believe it is the final pleasure piece. I would love to know the inspiration behind it. It reminds me of a fantastical children's book-- magical, slightly eerie, and like anything could be lurking behind it. The spots of ink in the sky are great and scattered. Love it. I honestly can't pick out anything that I don't like about your work. My only critique is that I'd like to see more-- more variety, more color, and perhaps something less comfortable. Pick something to draw that you never would choose by freewill. It would turn out really interesting.

    Lovely work

  6. Kelsey,

You have shown much mastery over many techniques and mediums this term, which is quite impressive. To begin I think your most successful image is that of the boulders and the rain done in charcoal I believe. this piece is a strong one for many reasons, but mainly because of you creation of space and movement. The viewer is able to understand that there is actual events happening in this secluded space due to the expression of rapid rain. Furthermore, the apparent bouncing boulders in the top right corner add to this feeling of motion.

Equally, i enjoy the fantasy quality of this image, the tree though obviously representing a tree is very delicate, whimsical and lacking in great tree like detail. I think that this only elevates the mood of the piece. You really show that you are aware of composition and cropping in this work.

On the other hand, the images with the gecko lacks this emphasize. Though the image itself is awesome, using color and depth to create space, I would love to see this cropped and focus maybe just on the head of the gecko or the whole body but narrowed, or even just add a jungle of sorts to the background of the little guy.

Differently however, I love the way the woman figure is so simplistic and delicate. The medium you used is awesome and the way in which she takes up nearly the whole page is beautiful. This image expresses a kind of content that I am really drawn to.

    Nice work this term!

  7. Your work is amazing! I am very impressed with your portfolio! I think you do a great job drawing detail and making your pieces realistic. Also, you are creative with how you execute projects. For example, the way you used both white and brown paper to draw on in the same work is very unique. Also, the way you sketched a girl drawing in class and then faintly showed people drawing in the background showed a clear focal point and was very well done. I also like your use of color in the drawing of the lizard. I think you are very talented and your portfolio was enjoyable to look at!
Something that might strengthen your work is to add more abstract pieces to give more variety to the portfolio. Also, you might try drawing a little bit more freely, not as tightly rendered. Other than that you have a great portfolio and good work!

  8. Kelsey,
Your proportions are so good! I really like the variety of subject matter in your pieces. They are all really different and unique. Your a really versatile artist and can use all of the mediums really well. My favorite is the one with the tree and the rain. There is a lot of movement in that picture and I love how you did the shading.
Something that would be good to think about more is the composition of your pieces. Also all of your work is very clean and straightforward, maybe playing around a little with movement more, like in the tree one, and having a little more freedom in the overall effect of the pieces. Like in the pine-cone one where you have the different paper background.

    I love your work!

  9. Though all of the drawings from your sequence are not in the pictures, I remember really liking them when we viewed them in class. I especially liked it because it showed a simple thing, which happens everyday, and showed the aspect of it that most people don’t consider. The shading on the bottles makes them look lifelike and detailed. The process of producing the bottles and what would happen if one of them were littered onto the ground. The shading on each of your pictures really emphasizes each angle and shadows. My favorite drawing of yours is the one of the rocks and the tree, with rain falling on them. It is really interesting how the rocks seem very smooth and soft, while the rain is jagged and violent. I am not sure whether the large balls on the bottom are rocks or not, the balls falling from the right frame make me believe that they could just be water droplets condensing on the ground. I think that the drawing could look even more realistic if you could draw some of the water droplets hitting the rocks, and breaking apart. The shades in that picture make it look dark and gloomy.

  10. First off I think the best part of your portfolio is the range that is shown. You have light, dark, small, large, realistic, abstract, ink, charcoal, pencil, even black &white and color pieces. Every piece is presented well. I feel the amount of detail that you put into your work is amazing. Your proportions are right on. I think that the storyboard project shows just exactly how great of an artist you are. I also really enjoy the piece with the tree in the rain. I love the dark gloomy feeling it gives. I don’t remember in person but it looks as though you used ink and charcoal, and that blend looks so great. Your figure drawing is one of my favorite figure drawings in the class. The shading in the still life looks really good the way that you used the direction you were shading to show the shape of objects, like in the sphere. My favorite piece in your portfolio by far though is your pinecone. The presentation is possibly the coolest I have ever seen. The way that you shade and use charcoal pencil and white crayon is really cool and effective. And the attention to detail is impeccable. Great Job!

  11. Your work, like Roxy's, is are ones of grand amazement to me. They are all so perfect and you have such a strong grasp on true artistic expression. I really enjoyed the lizard with all the use of color to help fully conceptualize the environment of this creature. Whether or not the original subject is in a cage or not, the drawing gives this strong feeling of wild and free. You are so versatile as an artist in your ability to create so many different types of art in such a perfect and stylized manner. Even the storyboard which was quite obviously about waste and human nature to not care for our environment, you added the human had to really drive home that we are the problem for this waste. The journey of one bottle from useful to just landfill was very strong in its stance, which I love.
I want to see more figure drawings! Seeing how perfect all your other work is, I really want to see the amazing images I know you must have created in the figure drawing section. I am also wondering as to where the perspective drawing of the stairways is. I remember that being the most captivating and perfect perspective piece made. I also feel like the ink abstraction needs a small increase of contrast.

  12. Your portfolio is incredible. All of our pieces carry a very professional style about them. It’s hard to just pick one to call my favorite, but if I had to choose a couple I would choose the lizard, and the picture of the rocks and the tree. The lizard really comes out to me because of the color use in the drawing, which not many people in the class did. Also, the detail in this picture is ridiculous. The only thing I would add would be something take up the white area of the page because there is a lot of blank space. And your shading in that picture is awesome. Your other picture of the tree and the rocks shows really detailed shading in the rocks, which really drew me to the picture. The use of different stroke widths is impressive as well.
I also really enjoyed looking at the progression from your sketches to your final piece. You have tons of sketches from different angles and I like how you decided to choose your final piece to draw. Overall, the work you do is incredible and it’s been a pleasure to watch you work this term!

  13. You’re awesome. And I really, really, really love the charcoal sketching of the pinecone. It is absolutely amazing. When you presented it I could not stop staring at it haha you were so creative everywhere from the matting of the piece to the shading of each part of it. How you added in the white chalk was a great idea and it made it a light piece even though it is kind of dark. It almost looks like an X-Ray and I want it.

Another favorite of mine is the drawing of the tree and rocks you did in the last week of class. I saw you start out and you seemed frustrated with your work at first. I was really happy to see that you overcame it and made the piece your own. Beautiful shading and I admire the way you matted the piece as well.

I very much admire your figure drawing. It’s so simple yet so gorgeous. The on drawing above of the river, I think it was, is quite different from the rest of your work. It’s kind of messy and playful. Almost like you were experimenting and I’m glad that you kind of stepped out of your comfort zone.

It’s hard to critique when you are such a great artist but really my only critique would be maybe… draw smaller? You have a lot of huge things and I want to see something super tiny from you. So tiny I will need glasses haha

I really would love to see more of your work. You are truly an inspiration, Kels!

  14. Your work is delightful to look at. Overall your portfolio is very strong. I like the way you organize your pieces as a collection. The pine cone that alternates between white and brown paper is very creative and successful. The use of the white chalk to highlight on the brown paper is what makes is so successful. I also really enjoy the humor in the random animals throughout the ink swirls above it. I like you charcoal storyboard, it is very detailed and the cropping and organization of objects within the composition is good. However, overall is too mid-toned for me. The light end of the spectrum is very developed but I would like to see some contrast between that and some very dark moments with in the composition. There is great contrast between the curves and quickness of the figure drawing and the detailed still life beside it. The raining tree is a very engaging piece because of the contrast and shading of dark to light. This is what I would like to see more of. You err on the side of light grey, and anything in the first half of the color spectrum. Go dark! Do something so black its overwhelming. The girl in your ink piece stands out so much because of this. The colored lizard seems very random and out of place as well. I like it and it looks good but it’s not framed, it is against a large white background and is very distracting to me.

  15. I love you pinecone. It’s really cool how you changed the backgrounds. That was a great idea. The other picture that really jumps out at me is the frog. It jumps out at me because is uses color unlike most peoples portfolios. Its not often when you see colors in this class. The frog looks amazing! The eye of the frog looks shiny and glossy like its really right in front of you. Your tree is really good too. It looks kind of like it was straight out of the nightmare before Christmas movie. It’s a little creepy. Your still life pictures and the picture of the model are great because they look so real. The shading on the still life picture is so good that it looks like its right there and the sheet in the background was shaded really well too.

Like I said in the extra credit, there is really nothing I can say that would help you out. You are a really good artist.

  17. Throughout the course i have really enjoyed seeing your work. Your work is very diverse and equally striking and beautiful in every medium. The way you used multiple shades of ink on the clothed figure drawing and still made it realistic is really awesome. My favorite piece by far is the Masterpiece inspiration. Everything about it is so stylized, mysterious, and whimsical. I catch myself just staring at it, cant look away! The rain-like lines add to the fanciful scape. I also really love your figure drawing, it is very simple yet so realistic, beautifully done. And of course the iguana in color is stunning. From your observational to your imaginative works i think you are an extremely talented artist.

Not a lot to critique if anything i feel. But if i must i would suggest trying to do more pieces purely from imagination, i think you could create some really fantastic stuff.

  18. The variation in the style of your work is amazing. Each of your pieces are so different and they are all so wonderful. I love how diverse your portfolio is! You obviously have a real talent with drawing. My favorite piece of your is probably the tree with the rocks, it’s so cool! I love how you used ink in this piece, it’s beautiful. Another piece I really enjoy is the pine cone. I love how you used different paper, it is so unique! I really like how the paper hangs a little off the side, it looks very natural to me which works well with the subject matter. Your figure drawings are wonderful as well; the curves and shading look spectacular! I could really go on and talk about how I love all your pieces but I’m just going to stop here and say you made great use of combining all the different mediums and there is also a great balance in all of your pieces. Whether balancing the abstract with the real or just the overall balance of each piece your style and technique made for a beautiful work. The only critique I have would be with your story board drawings I would have liked to see more variation in darks and lights to make the image pop out. Also with your interior and still life drawing I would like to see more variation in color as well to really get the images to stand out. Overall you have beautiful work, and your framing only adds to the excitement and interest to your work. I really enjoyed seeing your work this term.
