I really like your portfolio. All of your pieces are very well presented. You have a very distinct style, the viewer can tell that the works were all done by the same person. The portrait of your granpa(?) is absolutely remarkable. I was very impressed with the shading and how realistic it looks. On the other hand, it looks a bit unfinished toward the bottom... I am not sure if that was intentional or not, but I think I would have cropped it a bit, maybe just an inch at the bottom and on the right side. I think shading is really one of your strengths, your hand piece is very well shaded as is the elephant one. I think something that you might want to try is to be a bit more loose with your instruments... most of your pieces are very detailed and tightly rendered, very precise. It makes me wonder what it would be like if you just started splattering ink all over a big sheet of paper. I think also, some of the hands proportions and curves could use some more study (I know drawing hands is pretty hard.) My favorite piece of yours is the cliff one... with the dark shades and white background. It almost seems like a very bright day rather than just the white from the paper. Very nice work! -Valeria
Your attention to detail is impressive. It goes into all your pieces; from the hair strand on the zoomed in portrait to the fibers of the basket. On top of the shading that gives 3 dimensional aspect to the shapes. I like that all the pieces have a multiple darkness and still have a gradient. Texture is another element that your work has. I found this challenging to recreate and its natural on your work. Cropping and subjects are diverse. You portrait them all nicely. Some things that you may consider. The portrait of your Grandfather. looks unfinished I think it would be made into a bust drawing. My guess is that the picture is cropped at the place where you stopped. It is a great drawing. Good Job!
For starters, the drawing of your grandfather is fantastic. It is as though we are looking at the photograph you were when you drew it. Stunning. I remember you saying that landscapes are hard for you and that you didn't feel as though you were very good at them. Well, the landscape that you have presented is actually my favorite drawing of yours. It reminds me of the Chinese ink wash landscapes from way back. It's very beautiful. The only criticism I have is in the drawings of the ballerina and the close up of the flower in the lady's hair. There doesn't seem to be enough dark's in the drawings. They fall a little flat and could really pop if there was a greater value range. The two are very nice, just not as powerful as they could be. Good job.
I love the portrait (of your grandfather I believe) on the top left. It is a old-time quality to it and a great deal of respect and pride. The man has a lot of character and personality in his body language. You portrayed him very well and I think someone could write a story based off of this drawing. The hillside is another of my favorites- truly realistic and wonderful shading. It makes me want to see what inspired the piece. It looks slightly uncomfortable. The crack in the ground is mysterious. You have a great contrast between pretty sweet drawings and harsh realistic drawings. Your work could benefit from added detail. More shade contrast. Darker darks, lighter lights. They could add a new layer of depth to your work and take it up a notch. I enjoy it a lot.
Your portfolio has a certain whimsy to it that's really wonderful. I really like the dark values you use, especially in the teapot pictures and the landscape. They have a great sense of depth. In the teapot picture, I would suggest playing with the background a little bit; maybe add some abstract shapes as just a suggestion of background to add even more depth. You said landscapes were hard for you, but this one is really nice and read well in photo form and from a distance. I like its composition, it has a really epic feel. I really like all of your compositions, the placement of objects on the page and the angle, perspective, and close-ups create good balance. Your close up of the girl's ear, hair, and the flower is an interesting perspective and focus, but I think it could have more depth. The flower seems to be the focus, but it has no more detail that the rest of the drawing. You could add more depth with highlights and deeper shadows. You could also maker her hair more interesting with highlights, like erasing or white chalk. The portrait of you grandfather is really impressive! The shading on his face is flawless and smooth and his eyes are so life-like. I have a couple suggestions: you could try to get smoother shading on his jacket by using a very dark value pencil (which I'm sure you did) and smudging tool, like those paper stick things or a piece of paper towel or tissue. I also think it could be a lot stronger if your either finished the jacket's shading all the way down, or erased the lines of the sides of the jacket to make it more of just a bust. Very good and impressive overall! I really like your range of values and mediums. All of your pieces are nicely mounted and look very professional. Bravo!
The first thing that comes to mind when I see your portfolio is serenity. Most if not all of your pieces capture and share a sense of calm stillness. One of the pieces that shows this the most is the one of the girl in a handstand. The sheer position captures a literal moment of quietness, the moment after effort to get into that position and prior to the moment when she falls or dispenses from that position. the fact that you were able to capture what seems to reiterate a moment is reminiscent of a photo.
Furthermore, you were able to do this through the use of shading and creation of a real space. Your figure has depth and shape due to the consistency in the tonal range, and the manner in which the piece if framed. The lack of more in the background was a great decision which furthers the seclusion and delicateness of the "moment".
The one area of your work that caused some frustration was that one of the pieces, that of your grandfather was not finished, and the one of the hand had sketch marks still present near the finger. The matting and presentation of the images were consistent and well done, but the lack of completion of these two pieces caused a break in the awesome uniformity.
Otherwise you did great work this term and explored and dominated many mediums!
I LOVE your portfolio. I think you did an amazing job with your works and they way they are presented. I think you do a great job shading and making your works look realistic. I really like the portrait of your grandfather. I think it is so realistic and proportional. Also, I love the drawing of the girl with the flower in her hair, and how the focal point is on the flower instead of her face. Also, i think you did a good job choosing different subjects such as still life, people, landscape, and animals to give variety to your portfolio. To make your portfolio stronger you might try drawing more abstract pieces to balance out all the realistic pieces you have. Also, i would maybe use darker lines on some of your drawings because the ballerina seems to be a little bit faint making it hard to see all the detail. Lastly, I would maybe try a couple drawings where you completely loose structure and just draw freely and not tightly rendered. You have a GREAT portfolio though so good job!! -Ashley
Good presentation and varied sizes of pieces. I think it's great that for the most part you managed to utilize the entire scale of shades in your work. Especially in the cliff piece and the hand. Also your attention to light source really adds to the quality of your still life drawings. I enjoy the softness of your art and how your render your subjects in this light. I'm really drawn to the depth perspective of the cliff piece and I think that sort of attention to dimension would really add to your work. I like the detail of the textile on the woman's shirt in the figure drawing and I think playing with different textures and mark making would be a beneficial direction to take your work. Also, maybe consider trying to leave no unnecessary white spaces in your work. If there is white, it should be adding to the effect you wish your work to convey. Just an idea to experiment with.
It goes without saying that your ability to captivate a subject and make it seem as real as photograph is amazing. Your ability to blend in shading in such a manner to just smoothly run along an object as it does in real life is a strong gift that you used to your fullest potential. My favorite piece is the one of your grandpa and how old school of a feel you still give it. I can easily tell you used an older picture of him and you made that shine through in your re-creation. The shading on his face is one to be chalked up as perfection. In fact the shading in all of your photos are all perfect. I feel like you should try to go abstract and shade something so off the wall that even it feels real in its own respect. your figure drawing of the model is a little on the side of cartoony and doesn't feel as if it fully fits in context to your other works but has still has a very strong artistic style that works on its own. I am also confused a little as to why the elephant is missing one eye. Is his head turned and therefor we can only see that eye? Possibly just sketch in another eye prospectively smaller than the other.
Joanna Over all your work is great. I think the way you focus on detail in all your pieces is amazing. Everything is so realistic! Though this is a plus I think it is a bit of a minus also. I think you should have a few more pieces where you are just having fun be it more abstract and out of the box. With your artistic ability it could make for some really truly amazing stuff! Even in your presentation it is all very black and white a bit plan. Now that that’s out of the way the portrait of your grandpa is amazing! It looks more like a picture then a drawing! It is so life like. I also really like the rocks that you drew the shading is perfect and gives a great perspective and depth. Another great piece is that of the girl in the chair. Your attention to detail and shading is so well executed and it is a great example of your abilities. My favorite of all though is your first piece of the vines. I think I am drawn to this because it is different from your other drawings it’s a bit darker more abstract and the matting is unique to everything else and forces you to focus on the drawing. You really did a Great job!
Your portfolio is awesome. You said throughout the term that you had a tough time drawing inanimate objects, but your drawings don’t make it look that way! Whether your medium you used was ink, charcoal or pencil, your shading is great throughout all of your pieces. You have a very realistic approach to your work, and it makes all of your pictures very easy to identify and connect with. I really like the drawing of your grandpa, though I wish the background had something in it, or it was cropped differently. But from what you drew, it looks awesome. Your presentation throughout your pieces is really professional and clean. I also am really intrigued by your elephant picture. The only thing I would add to it would be an eye on his left side. I’m sure that was intentional, but I just feel like it’s a little bit off without that eye. The only thing I would say is that some of your drawings are very light and could use some darker lines or shades, but I’m sure that was a preference choice. Other than that your work all term was great, and I had a great time meeting you. Keep up the good work!
I really like your attention to detail in all of your drawings. This is particularly evident in your drawing of your grandfather in the top left frame. I think the most affective part of the piece is the direction of the shading. All aspects of him seem life like; his hair looks slicked back, his coat seems to be tailored downwards, but his face and under shirt seem still and calm. You also really captured the emotion, or lack there of, in his appearance and facial expressions. I think the drawing looks better without the entire jacket filled in, as well. One of the only critiques I have for you is to practice have more symmetric shapes in your drawings, it might help to make everything look even more still. I also really like the drawing you have of the flower in the woman’s ear. I like how the flower is more detailed than the rest of the face, so the flower stand out over the woman’s profile. I think that the woman’s face could look a little more detailed or realistic, but too much detail might distract from the flower being the centerpiece of the drawing. Nicky
I really admired your work over the course of the term. Your ability to draw something make it look realistic was amazing. The drawing of your Grandfather is by far the best work I have ever seen by you. It really looked like a black and white photo from far away but as I looked closer, I could see where your strokes were and I thought that was nice. The only thing would be for you to smooth out the lines a little more to maybe make it a little blurrier (only in the jacket though). The face is absolutely amazing!
Another piece of yours that I quite admire is the figure drawing where you integrated the charcoal and the Black India Ink together. The depth, shading and texture in this piece is great.
One piece that really stood out among the others was the elephant. It’s not very realistic. It’s kind of abstract in a way and I think that was great that you kind of went out of your comfort zone. I see the playful gestures of the brush and it’s really quite enchanting.
The variety of your work id great but I’ve noticed that you also to have life in all of your drawings, even the ones of the teakettle. You did a great job to add life to it.
Wow your pictures are great! Unlike some people I really like to see realistic pictures. It amazes me to see someone draw something and make it look so realistic and you did just that! All of your pictures look so realistic its crazy. The picture of the portrait is really good. It’s shaded perfectly. I really like all of your pictures, its hard to pick one or two pictures that I like more than the other ones. The cliff looks really good., its one of those pictures that looks better from farther away. The closer you get the less realistic it looks. The picture of the hand is amazing too because it looks so real. I love your work!
If I were you, I wouldn’t think I needed any help or comments from other students because my work is so good. So whatever I say will probably not help you. I think what your doing is great and I wish I could draw like you. Your portfolio looks professional. There really isn’t anything to be said other than good things. --Colby
The portrait of the man is amazing. I really cant get over how realistic and rendered your figures are. The way you use small lines for shading and detail in both the portrait and the hand drawing create such an interesting texture while remaining within the realm of realism. It's really excellent.
Another thing i cant stop looking at is the landscape with the tree and water line. It is such an image that i feel your piece was photographed and had lines transcribed on-top of it. Not to mention that you used ink and still made it so life-like! And the way you matted all your works creates an air of professionalism.
My favorite piece is the close up of the flower in the woman's hair. Its beautiful.
Your rendering and skill with realism is extremely good so i suggest you try and work out from your imagination. Try making something really out of the box. i think it would turn out awesome if you combined imagination with your skill with detail. Gorgeous work, I'm jealous!
You really have a wonderful portfolio. All of your pieces look very polished and professional. I’m blown away by your shading, it really makes your drawings stand out. You did a great job making an accurate figure more abstract by your use of lines and your style. Your figure drawings are amazing, you are so detailed and so flowing at the same time, this is difficult to do and is something I struggle with so I appreciate seeing this in your work. Your landscape drawings are wonderful as well. You really achieved capturing the essence by your shading and boldness of color. Your portrait drawings are wonderful as well. You really have a talent for drawing faces and making them look realistic! While your shading is stunning, I think you could benefit by making darker darks and lighter lights in some of your pieces because I think this would really make your pieces stand out. Also for your drawing of the women with the flower in her hair I creating more contrast in color would really make this image pop out. Overall your work is truly beautiful, nice work! Claire
