  1. I really like both your work in charcoal and in ink. I especially like the tree image. You capture the lighting and shape of the tree very well with the ink. The lightness of the background and the amount of detail create a great sense of depth. That's something I would suggest for the figure drawing in ink, maybe some light general shapes of the background. I'm really impressed with your charcoal pieces. The detail on the chain is so life-like. The highlights really make it pop. I might even say a little more highlights and variation in tone? It is very dark, but I think you dealt with that well in the lower one with the wand or stick-looking object.
Although you said the figure drawing was hard for you, I really like what you did with it. The one of of the back has a really interesting perspective. It's kind of distorted and elongated. The perspective and detail on the feet is intriguing. You capture the musculature with the shading and the line.
Your pencil drawing of the library has an interesting perspective on the columns, but I think it could use a lot more development. Really take advantage of the different darknesses of pencils. Also, I think it could be better if the top was cropped off. It would make the piece a more interesting shape as well as eliminate the large white space that doesn't really add to the composition. The perspective and proportions are very good in it, though.
One last thing, I think you could spruce up the entire portfolio with some matting and presentation. Your charcoal pieces look really nice and professional and I think if you had matted the tree, it would look really nice hanging on a wall. I like your layering of the figure drawing and they're good as they are, no mat.
Overall, very nice work! Your pieces varied, interesting and lively.

  2. I really like the sense of drama in the work due to the heavy use of blacks. It makes for striking images. I enjoy the manic cityscapes. There is so much energy in those two works which is contrasted by the other works shown that have a dark serenity to them. I find it impressive how you were able to keep the sense of play in the majority of pieces. The one criticism I would give is to keep your work clean. It is very distracting to see smudges and finger prints all over the work. Your work is good and should be treated as so. It would have also been nice to see the drawings mounted. Show them off a bit, they're good.

  3. I like you work. The variations on the brush stroke are good and the shading goes well with the texture. I also like your use of the paper. The drawings stretch the entire page, whats more is proportional. Your figure drawings are frame so that full figure takes the page and it is not cropped off. The graffiti art is creative. And the ink work on the long pose is great. you captured different shades of darkness and the folds of the fabric well. This is one of the few pictures that you didn't take entire page and looks good.
Your charcoal work is good. Rendering through the shapes make it realistic and choice of paper helped develop that.
One comment for improvement is presentation of the library drawing. it has a few smudges. Drawing is good but the finger prints are distracting. Also consider framing your work specially since you use entire page. Good Job!

  4. Cray,

The unique style of your work really stands out to me. After I saw the simple yet beautiful piece that you did of the tree in your backyard, I saw that you had a variety of styles in your pocket. You seem to really like ink and it seems to really like you as well. The crazy surrealist city is fantastic. It is loose and playful. I was really intrigued the first time I saw it and now as I look at it again, I am noticing a lot more detail that it awesome. Your figure drawings are talented. However, I would love to see some added detail and depth. Perhaps work a little smaller and create a more realistic piece. Framing your pieces could also make them more powerful. They had a piercing quality to them and that could really bring it out.

    Excellent.

  5. Cray!

Ummm...I really wish I got to know you better through out the term because you work is really awesome and seems that you have something to say that comes out in your work! :) the intriguing thing is I'm trying to figure out what it is. Now, this may sound odd, but what I mean is that your work has a subtle pulse to it that really draws one in.

You are able to achieve this I assume through your attention to detail, like in the tree image and the city image, you do not necessarily depict the trees exact texture, but you were able to depict the depth of the tree and the a type of texture through the use of the ink. Furthermore, you paid attention to your composition in all of your images, which i think is easily forgotten for many.

In addition to that your library image emphasizes the manner in which you utilize the entire space of the page and work perspective into your pieces. Though i would like to see a little more commitment, darker lines, in the library image, it happens to be one of my favorites despite that.

Equally, though I really enjoyed the chain comic, I wish this piece utilized negative and positive space in a more direct manner through stronger highlights and less mid tones.

Ultimately there is a strength to your work that I love!

  6. I was really impressed with your work throughout the term. One of my favorite pieces I saw all year was your picture of the tree with the lake in the background. That really looked like it was tough to do, at least it would have been for me. That really shows that you have a strength in using ink and being able to show the lighting very well through shading. I also really enjoyed the picture of the basketball player dunking the ball. That is also something that I really struggle with, and I’ve tried to draw people during a sports activity and they always turn out crappy, but yours looks the part.
As for your drawing from inside the library, I would recommend using darker lines to put more emphasis on different parts of the picture and to make some key objects jump off the page. Otherwise it seems kind of bland. I would also recommend that you should mat your drawings because it would give it more of a professional look when you’re presenting them. Overall, good work this term and I really enjoyed looking at it all.

  7. What more can I say but you mastered the use of ink in a very magical way. Every one of your ink pieces have their own strong feeling and proper depiction of mood to fully broadcast your vision. My favorite being the one of the man standing with what appears to be his back turned toward us looking out upon an ocean. It reminds me of the last pirate who lives in his cape of solitude caged in by the modern world around him. I feel as if he is standing there reminiscing over what was once an ocean full of possibility is now a channel of restricted waterway for shipment of profitable supply. One that he will one day sail again for his last time in to the abyss of his beloved sea. Then you back this up with many other depictions of the looming tree, the funky cityscapes (which I think are ink and charcoal mixed, but if just charcoal then wow), the figure of the model in the chair, and the abstract flows of the unknown objects in the other pieces. These all catch my eye over the other works you did in chalk and pencil as very much your style that you were able to explore to widely.
You said so in class and I agree that the smudges are slightly distracting in the pencil drawings, though the drawings themselves are phenomenal. With the perspective of the roof in the building I want to see you add your style of dark and mysterious to it a little to twist it into something much stronger. Along the same lines I feel if you made figure in charcoal more dark and mysterious with ink you would perfect them to a new level. Overall amazing work.

  9. Lets start with WOW! I think that you use such an amazing range of everything you didn’t miss a thing. Your work is abstract, realistic, detailed and well organized on the page. You even use all the mediums we were taught to use. The way that you can fill a page, and have perfect detail on the whole thing is admirable. There is also such an impressive range of values in all your works. I think a perfect example of all your strengths is in your tree piece. It’s phenomenal. I just want to emphasize once more how admirable it is that you use the whole page and leave nothing out. My one and only critique is that your work isn’t matted. If you added more presentation to your work they would be 5x better then they already are. Congratulations on a full portfolio of amazing work, good job!

  10. Cray,
I love your ink! I think it's my favorite ink work in the class. It has a really fluid, paint-like quality to it that's really professional looking. It's like I can feel the colors even though I can't see them. Overall I really like the variety in your portfolio and the use of the different mediums. I also like a lot of the perspectives of your pieces. Especially the figures. They're really interesting and different and draws your eye in cool ways across the page. One thing you could pay more attention to is your pencil drawings. They have a really different feel than the rest of your work. Bringing in a wider array of lights and darks would make those stand out more. Also, just presentation in general would make your work look more professional and interesting.
    I like it!

  11. I like the variety of drawing you put up; they all seem to have different themes or medias, or other elements. I think that the disproportion of shapes and sizes in your drawing of the city looks very interesting. But I think that the smudging of the media and the vastly different shades make some part of the drawing too emphasized over other parts of it. Earlier in the year I critiqued your sequence drawing of the chain. I thought the sequence didn’t make much sense, but I thought certain drawings were very attractive and impressive. My favorite drawing form the sequence was probably the one that you put up, of the light shining through the chain. I like it because it looks like there is so much action in the frame; the shining is gleaming, the wind is gusting in the background, while the chain is floating in the air. I also like the drawing of the basketball player dunking it. I can’t really see it too well though, and I think that shading it in more and making it darker would make it easier to see. I like the frame of the drawing though how you can see the rim dipping down, and the player raised over the floor.

  12. My eye was drawn to your portfolio almost from the very start of the critique. I also remember a bunch of your works from when they were hanging on the wall. I love the contrast of your pictures, and you definitely have a unique style. I really like all the works in the very first picture in particular. The one left to the tree is absolutely fantastic. It makes me think of a very turbulent sea or a storm. I also can’t really figure out what the shape on the left of the piece is supposed to be, but I think that adds a lot to the piece. Generally, in your portfolio I can see that one of your strengths is definitely composition. All of your pieces are placed well within the white space that surrounds them. I think you could try to work a bit softer in some pieces, kind of like the one of the library. It stands out in your portfolio because is one of the only ones that is more soft looking.
I really loved your portfolio, keep it up!

  13. Overall, your work utilized the value scale really well. Predominately with your ink and your charcoal pieces. I'm really drawn to your radio and chain charcoal drawings. The lighting and movement is captured effectively through your use of deep values and lines. The way you work with charcoal in capturing texture is really great. All of the ink pieces are really enticing. It's great how you layered the ink to render the shadows of the still life. Your pieces also show that you have a good sense of composition. The fact that most of your work fills the page provides context for the subjects of your pieces. With context, your subjects thus hold so much more weight in emotion and meaning.
As for critique, the pencil drawings are lacking a wide range of values. The pencil drawings can be hard to decipher from a distance. In the two charcoal drawings of what looks like abstract city-scapes, I would recommend cleaning up shapes and lines. There is some interesting work with shapes and lines, but they get lost in the blurred charcoal. I have to note, however, that the perspective of the city scape is really interesting. The line of the bridge leads my eyes right into the focal point of the bulging city. I think what makes them have such unified compositions is also in the placement of values. The darkest parts of the drawing are balanced by the juxtaposing values. Areas where the drawing is darkest is counter balanced by areas of lightness. Despite the chaotic lines of the drawings, the directions they lead somehow unite the piece. With most of your pieces there is so much going on, but I think this gives the pieces unique texture. I would just work on making the shapes more legible as they can sometimes be lost against other shapes.

  14. I am very impressed with your portfolio. Your talent is extremely evident from your works and i think you show how much control you have over your talent. I love you piece of the tree in your backyard. I think it looks like a black and white photograph and it shows how well you use ink. Also, I like your graffiti drawings, because it shows a personal style or maybe personal preference of yours. I think your portfolio is very versatile with the subjects you chose to draw and I think each piece is very well done.
Something you might try to strengthen your work is having a slightly more professional presentation of each work because some works have smudges on them or got messy in the negative space. Also, in the library interior, you might try shading a little bit darker to show depth and make it stand out more. Lastly, try to pay more attention to proportions of the body in the figure drawing. Other than that i think you have a GREAT portfolio! Good work!!

  15. I can really tell that you like to draw dark and I think it works well for you. One piece that stands out to me is one of the first that you had done. The one with the spheres twisting and has like some kind of electricity coming out of them is very admirable. I really like how you were able to get the different shades of the charcoal beside and on top of each other.

Another one I like a lot id the one to the right of it. It looks like there is a pirate looking at the sea. It looks really cool and I think you did very well with the black India ink. You are really good at finding different shades to create layers and different dimensions.

I like your sketching of the basketball player dunking because you drew lightly and you did a great job with it. Next to that is your homework and I think you did a great job with the charcoal and the little designs on the skull. The whole thing looks like a poster. I just think you should have made it larger so that we could see more detail from even far away.

Overall, you did a great job this term.

  16. Your work is pretty cool. The ones that jump right out at me right away are the ones with all the different shades of dark and light, It looks like a street or city. I like how you used all the different shades with the charcoal. A lot of people didn’t do that and I like how it is crazy. The road is all windy and everything is out of proportion. Its looks cool! The Grateful Dead poster is really good too. You are great with the charcoal. Your people are really good because they are very realistic too. The last thing and maybe the best thing that I liked is the tree picture. It looks so creepy! Really nice job! That must be the hostile environment.

Your still life from the library could have used darker lines because is it pretty hard to see from farther away. That actually goes for a few of your drawings. Without blowing them up you cant tell what they are. I think I can kind of tell that you really enjoyed and worked hard on some and on others didn’t care as much but maybe that’s just me. You should spend the same amount of time on the ones you don’t like as much as you did with the Grateful Dead poster and the tree picture.

  17. Your work with ink is gorgeous. The way you have articulated it in your works is stunning. Taking even the simplest of scenes such as looking out your back door, and making them into art that i might buy in a museum is amazing. My favorite is of the cloaked figure looking out into the endless black sea. It is such a dramatic piece intensified by your use of different shades of ink and centralized focal point. The piece has so many different emotions tied to it and so many different possible stories around it that i find myself just staring and letting my mind wander. One of my favorites I've seen the whole term.

I also like the way you used charcoal to create these abstract images of discord and chaos. And at the same time your observational, figure, and realism drawings are very realistic and hold a different kind of beauty.

Overall, really fantastic work this term. I think that black matting on everything could have taken the work even further. And there is a quality gap in a couple of pieces compared to the rest but even so your style is great.

  18. I really enjoy the chaotic feel in some of your pieces. In the images of the town there seems to be som much going on but it is also clear and the use of darks and lights work very well. I also think you did a great job creating depth in your pieces, for example the tree piece. Your use of shading is also very pleasing. I like how it’s not all blended and the choppiness is very effective. You did a good job getting the right proportions in your figure drawing and the shading done here looks really good as well. As a critique is to create more detail in some of your pieces, I like the blurriness that you create but adding some detail would be a good variation to add. In your interior drawing adding darker darks and lighter lights would look really nice as well. Also the smudges on your pieces are a little distracting so cleaning those up would make you pieces look more polished. Overall, l really like the perspective and style of your drawings. They are fun and playful and you also make good use of the page. Good job!
