  1. You have a beautiful use of line in your work. I’m not sure if you intended this or not but I really like that your pain piece is of a happy, adorable looking teddy bear. It’s quite ironic. I also love how you turned around the masterpiece from the girl looking in the mirror to drooling over the doughnut, it’s hilarious! I think you have really great movement and expression in your work. The dancer in mid-air and the storyboard, which has fairly simple compositions, is able to speak so much because of the expression and movement you utilize.
With the exception of the hourglass piece, I noticed that you tended to place focal points on the left side of the page, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it doesn’t ruin any of the pieces, its just something to think about and pay attention to. It could be part of your style or something you work with experimenting on. Your storyboard does a great job incorporating the background into the whole composition but I think you could experiment with more elaborate or detailed backgrounds and see how that adds to your compositions. Your hourglass piece is a great example of that.

  2. Your style is very clear and graphic. It seems that you have the power to draw what you're thinking and for the message to come across really clearly. I really like the Vogue model images. You translate the copy really well to the inspiration version. Your changes are congruent and don't look out of place or added in at all. It's also fun and interesting commentary on the fashion industry. I would suggest playing with the background a bit to make it more interesting. You try some abstract or vague shapes to suggest some sort of background. I think that suggestion can carry over to the rest of your work, too.
I would suggest maybe trying more abstract imagery. One way to do this would be to play more with your materials and just make shapes and lines and play with value. This doesn't have to be completely abstract, but it could lead to more interesting representations of real things, too. The hear and the book image are really good examples of this.
I think you have a really good grasp of the human figure. You use shading really well to convey the musculature and bone structure. Your shading on the vogue model shows the face structure well and your shading on the figure drawing really highlights the human shape of the stomach. You also worked really well with her pose.
My favorite piece is probably the hourglass. I really love the bold lines and the sharp highlights. It really pops off the page!
One last thing I would suggest would be cleaner presentation. The lines of the mats are not all straight or clean. You could use that to your advantage if you exaggerate it and math it to a piece that would call for it, like maybe the heart. However, I like that you mounted most of them at all!

  3. I really like the different styles that you use in your drawings. The series of gum photos show a almost cartoony type of drawing, then you get realistic in your figure drawings and then playful again with the teddy bear and the heart. This is good because I felt like I was too similar in all my styles and I wish I would have branched out and tried different things. You also do a really good job with shading, especially with charcoal. Your gum series is extremely well done, and just flows so fluently from one shade to the next, and it really captures the lighting that you wanted it to portray.
I also really like your master copy of the lady and then the inspiration off of it. Those are really well done and quite humorous. The only thing about those I would recommend doing is maybe giving them some background because there is a lot of white paper behind her and it is kind of distracting.
My eye is drawn to the hourglass drawing, probably because of the blue, but I really like it. That is probably my favorite of the drawings. Your overall presentation looks very nice, but I might recommend cutting the edges straighter because you can kind of tell when they’re not, unless that was a personal preference.

  4. Ashely,

You have talent and your work is very clean and professional looking. I am amazed that you can make your lines look so crisp and clean-cut. You have a delicate way of shading. There is no distinct line between the shade, they just seem to blend together very smoothly. It is obvious that you have a way with the pencil. It seems to be your favorite medium and it is definitely working for you. The varied texture and darkness you can create with graphite is stunning.
It would be cool to see some more abstract work. Something that is less defined and possibly looser. Try to focus less on the final product and more on just letting your creativity fly! You seem to be going with the style that works but it would be great to see your art out of its comfort zone and reach a new level.

    Great work, Ashley!

  5. Ashely,

There is a vast simplicity to much of you work, which is then countered by a strong attention to detail in the others. I really like this about your work, but am much more attracted to the piece with much more going on in them.

Another aspect of your work similar to that of Eric's or Jordan's s that you allow some comical aspects of your work to show themselves ever so often. I think the depiction of the fortune teller with the mirror and then the doughnut is brilliant, comical, and makes a statement about how American's view food all at the same time.

The depiction of the teddy bear and the model are equally adored due to the awesome use of shading and creation of space and depth. Furthermore you showed your ability to utilize both pencil and charcoal to their full potential.

I do however stand by one of the previous statements made at the beginning of the term, that is that I would love to see one of the last images of the gum with little hands reaching our or faces in pain of sorts to really add a feeling to the piece.

In addition to that I think that more attention could be given to composition when it comes to the pieces such as the dancer in the air and the fortune teller so that they are not just present in a hypothetical space, but actually in a space.

All in all your work has been a joy to see each class.

  6. Good composition and cropping. all your work is elaborate, both in ink and charcoal. I remember your story board from the earlier part of the term. It is memorable. The different views and perpectives are great.
THe teddy bear drawing has just the right lever of darkness not too obscure. Its a good representation of the fabric of the bear.
Your library drawing is well composed I can see the the features of the room and the light as it hits it.
The hearts that you have in ink, are a my favorite. I didnt see anyone else use the wax crayons. I am glad i see your work.

  7. Charcoal was quire obviously your strongest suit, that or you mainly worked with it, but I really enjoy the perspective and ideas you depicted. My favorites are your figure drawing, and the two of the lady with the doughnut and the make up mirror. You have this strong ability to take such feminine forms and personify them in a way I have not see in any one other works. The figure drawing is so elegant with the strong outlining and the soft skin tone that both help fully feminize yet personify the subject. Her expression on her face fully brings it all together with the way she is so elegantly looking to the side. The other two are very humorous in that one she is this depiction of some vogue model and then the other she has this doughnut that seems as if she hasn't had a doughnut in so long that she is literally drooling out of her mouth at its sight. All of your work has that soft and elegant feel as well that makes them all so real and tangible. I wanted to hug the teddy bear by how soft it looked.
Suggestions would be to explore depicting something a little more brash. Like how would you depict a male subject? As rough and rugged? Or could you make a female rough and rugged yet still very feminine? Maybe make the background seem as if she is this fine person amongst a world of the opposite as well. Also I want one more picture of the story board as to if the gum gets on her face or not. That little detail is leaving me in suspense. Aside from some simple exploration in different manners your work was amazing and versatile with the ink pieces as well. Good work.

I like how allot of your pieces have meaning behind them. Most especially and my favorite your re-make, The lady who’s holding the pocket mirror in one then a donut in the other. I think this is so cleaver! Not only that but it is so well done the shading is realistic and the remake is very well done compared to the original. I also enjoy your abstract work like the book with the crazy smoke or fire coming out of it. I love the way you used lights and darks. Your figure drawing is also very well done. She looks very real and life like. I really like how you also display a large range of abstract and realistic and even combination pieces. Also your range of subject matter and medium is very good. The amount of value you use is great and brings your work alive! I really think you did an all around great job! Keep it up!

  9. I really enjoy your work. I like the choice to mount your story board assignment on a white backing. They probably would have gotten lost on a black board due to the darkness of the drawings. I also like how you emoted the face in your story board work. I get a true sense of the person's feelings. I think the proportions of you model drawing are done nicely. That shit is so hard! You did a good job with it. The one thing I would point out is that some of the drawing feel incomplete. Your story board feels as though it doesn't need anything else in the compositions to finish the drawing, whereas some of the others do. Like the ballerina drawing. I know you wanted the ballerina to be floating in the air, but it feels like it's missing one little thing that would bring it all together. All in all though you work is very good.

  10. I really like the playfulness and softness of your drawings. I like how in your sequence drawing, the first two drawings seem very still, but in the rest of them the gum seems free and moving around. The shading and shadows of the gum and the hand also make the series much more dramatic. Having each drawing in the series from a different perspective, or angle makes each one original and appealing. The drawing of the library also shows your attention to shadows and shades, but also your ability to draw in good detail. Every part of the drawing looks perfectly proportional and realistic. I think that the picture could look better if you showed the shadow from the light or added more elements to the drawing. I think hat many of your ink drawings don’t appear too detailed, but abstractness of the open book with flames coming out of it is interesting. I like how the different shades of the smoke coming out of the book shows the motion of the smoke; seeping out. I think that the book and the pages could look more symmetric and real, or it could look good making the book distorted, to make the whole picture aboriginal.

  11. I really love your version of the master piece, the donut just made me laugh but most importantly, the expression on her face is so perfect for the situation. I love how careful and meticulous your drawings are. They all look very clean and sharp, but you might want to try to do something more loose at some point. I really love the hourglass piece. The black and blue just makes it so beautiful, I wish more of your portfolio looked similar. I really like the composition of it, and how the top left corner of the hourglass touches the center of the black and blue rays. I also really like your ballerina, I only wish you hadn’t cut out the front toes... I think if she had been centered in the frame the piece as a whole would have been more striking. I really like your 6x6 piece, the one with the pine cone. I love how dark it is and how you shaded it. You can see so much detail on it!
Great work, I really like your portftolio.

  12. Ashley,
I really like your work! It's really appealing and fun, and sometimes also funny. I think its great when artists can portray humor so well in their work! I also really like your human figures. You have a really distinct style of drawing human faces and figures that's unique but still really life like. I love the one with the doughnut and mirror. I love her facial expression and I think you did an awesome job capturing the right expression. I think you did a good job with charcoal and using all of the tones and bringing light and dark into your pieces. It would be good to work on that in your pencil drawings also. Paying more attention to the full range of light to dark. Also, maybe paying more attention to composition; which is really strong in some of your pieces, like in the teddy bear one, but lacking in ones like the ballerina where some of her toe is cut off. Also it would be cool to see more ink work, I really like what you did with the ballerina and the ink.
    I really like your portfolio!

  13. Overall, your pieces utilize the value scale really well. Especially for your story-board drawings. They all have a great range of values, which helps the emotion of the story be effectively illustrated. Plus, the varying perspectives of the frames aid in the telling of the story and make the entirety very readable. Also, the hourglass piece renders the light really well. The composition is great in that you filled the entire page and the shapes not only guide the eyes to the focal point, but aid in the motif of the piece. For critique, I think that the pencil drawings could use a broader scale of values, but I mainly just say that for the library drawing. Secondly, some of the subjects of your drawings are cut off strangely (i.e. the tip of the foot of the dancer). In addition, I would like to suggest focusing on the background of your pieces. Experiment with ways to make the background emphasize the qualities of the primary subject. Lastly, for the life drawings, if your intention is to make them seem more life-like, try to avoid outlining the subject with dark lines. Rather, blend the values into the lines to make the subject seem more rounded than flat.

  14. Yo Ash,
Your ability to draw human figures is amazing. The hands and feet are really cool looking and I think that you have pretty much mastered drawing them. Your figure drawing is amazing and I really like your choice to leave the background white on top.

Your creative drawing is very interesting. It kind of reminds me of Harry Potter when Harry is in the library at night and he opens the book that has a screaming face.

And of course I am going to talk about your masterpiece drawing. I am so glad that we brainstormed together about this drawing because I would have never done this great of a job.

To the left of that is the drawing of the pine cone. That is probably my favorite drawing of yours because of the darkness surrounding the lightness. Also, the background is nice because it draws my eyes down towards the bottom left. Great job and I would totally buy this from you and frame it.

I like the drawing of the library. You did a great job with the shading in the archway and also behind the books on the bookshelf.

    Awesome Job, Ashley ☺

  15. Hello Ashley,
Your artwork is really good. I can’t really pick a favorite to talk about but I do like the ballerina because it looks so realistic and she looks like she is flying or floating through the air like a bird! The other cool picture was the hourglass one. It uses color, which is amazing because hardly anyone used color in there portfolios. I don’t’ get how you got away with it! My other favorite was the book with the crazy monster design thing coming out of the pages. The design is really cool. It looks like fire. You are really good at shading. The gum storyboard is done really well. The hearts are cool too.

There isn’t really anything I can say that would help you. You are so much better than me at art that whatever I would say would be no help to you. But I guess I could say that you could have not done some of the pieces as good so you can make others in the class feel better about their work. With you being so good on your work, it’s making most everyone look bad. Haha I cant really think of anything to say to be honest except nice job! It was great meeting you!

  16. Your art never ceases to impress me. From the moment you drew that perfect hand in thirty seconds, i was thinking "i better watch this one". I of course love the entire charcoal project involving a laid back day of fun for some sticks of gum until a colossus of a monster decides it is tired of bad breath. The way you shaded everything and made it look as dramatic as it possibly could blew me away. Not to mention the masterpiece copy and doughnut lustful counter-part. They are both drawn with such detail that i could help letting out a sigh of disappointment and regret when looking back down at my own work in-progress. And i must note how much i like your figure drawing, its extremely realistic.

Not really anything to critique on except maybe try to do more works out of your imagination and really go crazy with some nonsensical idea! Bet it would turn out cool! Wonderful work!

  17. All of your work makes great use of the whole frame. It is obvious you were very thoughtful with your placement of the objects. Also your shading and use of darks lights and midtones are wonderful in all your images especially the storyboard images. Your ink drawing of the woman dancing is beautiful. You really controlled the ink which is a hard thing to do, and it turned out stunning. Also your figure drawing is beautiful. The shading and overall shape is very accurate and looks really nice! I can see that you do well with all of the mediums we worked with in class, I would however like to see more charcoal work from you. Obviously you are very good at drawing accurately, I would like to see you let loose a little more and go wild with charcoal or the ink. I think that would strengthen your portfolio to see that you can go from very precise, detailed and accurate to completely abstract and loose. Also it might be fun to see more variation in the sizing and framing of your pieces just to spice things up and make your drawings more intriguing. I really enjoy your work and can see you have a true talent for drawing! Good job!
