  1. I told you this in class but I am still completely in awe of your pen renderings of the masterpiece assignment. The shades and variation you were able to get out of an ordinary ball point pen is amazing. I also really like that you chose to use the compositional style to create an original work instead of merely adding or subtracting to the original composition. Your cropping and framing is really great too, the way you incorporate multiple scenes into on continuous work really stands out. It adds this light, humorous, playful notion to them, especially with the whales.
I’d like to see how the storyboard would look if you were to simplify the framing, perhaps separate each frame onto its own page, just for contrast. Everything is either very real or cartoon like, and I think it would be interesting to see an abstract take on that, like abstract whales (Why not?). The ink leaves piece is so different from everything else, although the cropping in great and it looks good, it’s almost too plain compared to the character everything else has. Even the interior pieces have a slight character and stylized aspect to them, the leaves don’t. On it’s own, I really enjoy it but its almost weak compared to the rest of your portfolio which is so lively and strong.

  2. First of all, I REALLY love your interiors and drawings of buildings. The perspective is perfect and the images come across really clearly. I like your use of clear lines; you use a pretty good variety of line weight to portray the images. I really like the perspective and angle on the library ones, especially the one with the clock in it. It makes for a very interesting composition.
I know you said you had trouble breaking out of your cartoon-y style, but I would say embrace it! I agree, try different things, but your style is really good and I think you could work with it and develop it further. If you really do want to try other styles, I would suggest finding a realistic piece of figures by another artist and really examining very closely all their lines, shading, shapes and textures. You could even try a photograph and really investigate the lighting and shapes.
One thing I have to suggest is cleaner presentation. I like that you matted almost all your pieces, but the edges of the mats are sometimes rough and messy in a way that doesn't seem to me to add to the piece. I like your variety of shapes of papers, but you don't necessarily have to match the mat with the paper shape. I really like that you cut out the figures, but I would suggest maybe another layer of matting, maybe with brown paper to add interest.
I like your use of ballpoint pen! It's really impressive. I would suggest also trying out ink in a similar manner, maybe with a small brush or a calligraphy pen.
By the way, you instantly won me over with that whale. It's so cute! I really love its close up and from the side. Adorable!

  3. I really like your cartoony, playful style of drawing. It seems very loose and free, which is something that I wish I had. I also really like your drawings with pen, and the different shadings you were able to get with just that. That’s also impressive because that’s unforgiving and they are so well done. I’m really drawn to the picture you drew of yourself smoking. It’s got a very loose feel to it. The only thing I would add to it would be some kind of background or something in the top left corner behind him. It just seems kind of blank there.
Your presentation could be worked on. Some of your edges are cut pretty poorly which left a lot of uneven edges. I would recommend using a razor and a ruler and it’ll look a lot more professional.
I am really drawn to your two drawings of the cafĂ© at the bottom, especially the one on the left which says “Phillies”. The shading you use in that picture is really well done and it brings out an attitude and an emotion with the drawing.
Overall, I really enjoyed all of your work.

  4. Ben,

Your perspectives of the "Phillies Cafe" is so awesome. I really love them. They seem much different than the rest of your work and it makes me wonder if this is where your best drawing abilities lie. The lines are perfect and it is not at all skewed. Your best work in my mind. I also am really attracted to the close up of the face smoking a cigarette. Really cool perspective and though it's slightly cartooney, it is of great proportion and the angle is right on. I really admire your ability to find the correct angle and render the rest of your work around it-- making many of your pieces appear as a snap shot from life. Awesome quality that I've been striving for. You use of different texture is fun. As much as I do enjoy your style, it would be nice to see a more realistic piece. Something that lacks the cartoon-esque quality, even if it is out of your comfort zone.

    Love your work!

  5. Ben,

I really envy and equally enjoy your ability to manipulate pen in such a detailed manner. Pen drives me crazy and yet you picked a medium outside of those required in class and showed it whose boss. That is you of course, you're the boss of that pen ahahah. But anyway, you also worked well with other mediums, such as ink.

The leaf pattern in ink, I believe, is very impressive because it shows that you considered your composition, your focal point, the presence or lack there of detail, and your use of varying tones.

Furthermore, the utilization of positive and negative space really allow this image to elevate itself.

On the other hand I think the image with the flame in it, though awesome perspective, would benefit from some more detail, shading and emphasize on the flame since the perspective tells the viewer that the flame is of some importance.

Equally a little more attention to the manner in which your images are matted would also elevate the work. i like the varying matte colors but wish the position of the woman were more synchronized and maybe matted twice to express validity.

    Overall nice job this term.

  6. Im at Aw about your work. Everything looks really cool. The composition of the cigarette lighting is great. I can imagine your work as a story board creator for Quentin Tarantino. The texture that your media expreses is good. The rendering is creative and realistic.
Charcoal work is great i can see details on the different part of the drawing. Its filled with charcoal and looks natural.
Finally Your hostile environment takes a good perspective. The exaggeration of the horizont line, Warpt look makes the reality of ur image realistic.
Finally on the faces on the white space are clever.
    Good Job

  7. I really liked how you cut your figures out around the body as so to look as if they are stuck in this place of struggle. This manner in which they are presented help personify the real struggle of the model to have to hold still for so long in our class. The other one that blew me away was the one of your self portrait lighting up a smoke. It is very abstract and different from most other points of view. I also enjoyed the last two of the depiction of the old diner with the people all dressed up inside, and then the grocery store right next to it. They both have a strong attention to detail and make the viewer feel as if they are there as part of the scene standing outside. All of you work has a strong and detailed style with very clean and strong lines.
Try to get a little more messy and explore going outside of your lines. I feel you restricted yourself too much to perfection at times. Along with that explore new things other than just perspectives of buildings and people. You did a little with the leaves in ink and that one piece leaves me wanting more of that style as well. Also your works were a little flimsy on the wall and though they stayed and you fixed them, maybe try to have a more solid matte set up before presenting. Aside from that it was cool to see how structured and disciplined your work was all term. Good job.

I really like the presentation of your work. I like how you cut around your storyboards and draw them all together on the same piece of paper. I also like figure drawings that you cut around and pasted on the black paper it’s a cool effect. I like how every piece that you created is very fun and eccentric like your face page. And also the Whatever page, I think that the way you and your sister I think you said both added different pieces of it one at a time is really creative and cool. It turned out really well and I really enjoy it (even though it is the end of the world, I guess, whatever). The Lighter picture reminds me of the gorillaz. Your perspective drawings are very proportional and detailed. I rally think you did a good job showing a range of your abilities. Congratulations and a great job!

  9. Your masterpiece drawings are fantastic. You really captured the essence of a lonely night scene. I rather enjoy the playful nature of your work. The whale is hilarious. I also like the way you chose to present the work. When I think of matting stuff I have it in my mind that the mat board must have perfect right angles on every corner, but you chose to allow the edges of the mat board mirror some of the edges on your drawings. It is an unexpected twist that I wasn't sure about at first but came to like in the end. One criticism I have is that I wish you could bring the sense of drama from the masterpiece drawings into the rest of the work. Those two have a strong sense of theater about them and the rest of the work could benefit from that. Not to say that every other work falls flat, they are just not quite as dramatic. Good work.

  10. I like your use of shapes in most of your drawings. One of your drawings that isn’t in here is the one of the men sitting at the bar table, it looks like its from the 50’s or something. But it looks similar to the drawing you did of the library, but the other one just had a more interesting context. I think that the shapes of the railing in the library drawing, gives a good perception of the angle and movement of it. My favorite drawing of yours is probably the one of you smoking the cigarette. I like how it is one of your most detailed drawings, but it also looks like a sketch from a notebook or something. I like how you drew you smoking it form that angle, even though you obviously wouldn’t be able to see yourself from that angle. The motion of your lines are also very complementary of the picture; your beard goes down, hair flows to the side, the cigarette smoke is rising, and the ember of the flame looks really realistic. The only flaw in the drawing is that your nose looks a little strange, but it does not distract too much form the composition.

  11. I really like the fishbowl picture! I love how it looks cartoony and that the people in the picture seem to have big heads. I think it makes the drawing work as a whole. The shading, the composition, the matting, everything about this work is just great. I also really enjoy your pattern assignment. I think it is very simple and elegant, and I love the blue matting (blue is my favorite color) I also love the chaos on the work right below it, I’m not sure what is happening but it all seems to be coming out from some bizarre comic book.

I think you’re very good at drawing buildings and structures, but could use a bit of improvement on figure drawing. I think mostly your humans look very cartoony, which works really well in all of your pieces, but you might want to try to draw humans more realistically at some point. I also love the piece you have of the cigarette and lighter. The way you composed this picture, and the general style of it really makes me think of the graphic novel (that inspired the movie) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The way you drew it very much reminds me of how the author draws people. Great job!

  12. Ben,
I really like the detail of your interior and exterior architecture pieces. You have an eye for dimension and proportion that's really impressive and appealing. I like your attention to composition in these pieces, the way you used the edge of the pages to your advantage and the way you placed the work inside the constraints of that. It makes your work really intriguing. I think this perspective is one of your strong points and you use it really well. Like in the piece with the guy smoking. Super cool! I love how it looks like the cigarette is jumping out of the page. You also have a really good attention to detail. You can really see your improvement throughout the term, and that's cool. Some critiques would be to practice more with figures and more abstract pieces. Bring in that attention to composition and detail into works like that. It would be interesting to see what your style would look like infused with a little more freedom and spontaneousness. Also in your charcoal drawings use more of a wider range of lights and darks to bring out the tonal qualities of your pieces. That would add a lot to your work.
    Overall really good!

  13. Of what is shown in your portfolio, I think your strongest suit is capturing perspective with the line drawings. The library drawings and the drawing of Phillies and the Fish Bowl have great composition. You have a good awareness of aesthetic composition when it comes to these perspective drawings. They also show awesome attention to detail. I really like how you utilized the ballpoint pen to capture the detail in the Fish bowl and Phillies piece. I find it amazing how you could capture the entire value scale using the ballpoint pen. For pointers, I suggest you clean up the presentation part of your portfolio. The matting is jagged and uneven in some areas, which can take away from the quality of your work. Another critique would be to deepen the value scale of your charcoal drawings. This would help heighten the feelings you wish to convey in the story of the whale and the boat. Finally, I would like to point out that some of your pieces were hard to discern what the subject or focal point was. Like with the faces of sponge bob piece, I didn’t know that it was sponge bob until you said so. I would suggest providing more dimension and value to the piece.

  14. Ben,
Your portfolio is very enjoyable! I noticed the way you matted your work and i thought it was so unique and clever. Especially the way you matted your library interiors because I like how the corners are connected and then they go off to opposite directions. Also, I love how you cut out the images from the figure drawing and then matted them. I think that is SO creative and different and it was good to see something refreshing like that. Also, I like your "whatever" drawing because of the use of your color and the abstract/realism of it. Something to work on could be adding abstract pieces to your portfolio. Because I love the cafe drawing and all the realistic drawings you have, but one or two crazy different abstract pieces could make it really strong! Also, you might try adding more detail to some of your drawings instead of just outlining them, such as shading or adding texture. Other than that i think you did a great job, and the presentation of your portfolio was one of my favorites!

  15. I really like most of your drawings especially the ones of the library. The one of the round balcony is very precise and I think you did a very good job with this. Also, the positioning of it is great and very appealing to the eye.

The drawings of the whale are very sweet and it looks like it should be in like a children’s book or something. I think you did a very good job at showing the story without words.

Your painting with the branch and leaves is really cool looking and I think it was good choice to leave the background white. It makes the branches stand out more. The colorful drawing below is funny and it looks like there are layers of drawings placed on top of each other. It looks really cool.

Your homework assignment with the masterpiece is awesome. Your use of shading is great and I like how I can see the lines of where you were drawing. The inspiration looks futuristic and it seems like you meant to do that. You did a great job at that. I also like it because it looks like a comic from the newspaper. Very cool.

    Great job!

  16. I really like the back and forth drawing. Not only does it use color which we haven’t seen a lot of this quarter but it also looks like you had a lot of fun with it. I didn’t have as much fun during mine. Maybe my friend wasn’t as good of an artist or just not that creative. I liked the leafs too. They look really wavy and real. That one is probably my favorite. It just looks really clean! I like how you matted your storyboard pictures. Its like you did it on one big picture but they are all separate. Good idea. Its really cool how you cut out the model pictures and posted them up. That was a unique idea. I don’t think anyone else did that.

I think you could have used ore shading. You didn’t use it very much and it really would have been easy to just use the charcoal and add to some pictures and emphasize the main idea of the pictures. I like how used dark lines on the still life picture but you didn’t use much shading in it. It could have looked even better!

  17. First off everything is matted well giving it a nice presentation. My favorite piece by far has got to be the close up of the man smoking. When the piece was on the wall you got a sense of the size and that made it have a big presence within the room. I love how straightforward and gritty it is. Cool that your drawings can be very precise and structured, such as your work in the library; while on the other hand it can be loose and carefree, like in the switch off drawing and fun faces piece. Like how light and airy the ink makes the leaves look on the branch, and how you took your figure drawings to the nest level by simply cutting and pasting.

I think that you could go further still with pushing the boundaries of your borders, and adding darker shading and contrast to make your pieces stand out even more. Try experimenting with really abstract stuff and see where that takes you. Really nice stuff!

  18. I love your style and how you presented all your pieces so uniquely. I really like how you cut out your figure drawings, it looks really cool. You also did a really good job capturing her overall shape in those positions! I really like the image of the cigarette being lit. The style of all of your work especially this piece reminds me so much of the Gorillaz cartoon characters! I really love this style. Also your interior drawings are amazing. Your shading, proportions and everything about your interiors, especially the masterpiece, are amazing. You did really good job thinking about the whole frame, it creates a really good balance. I would like to see you use more of the ink, which looks really nice in the plant image, I would like to see this explored more with you. Also it would be fun to see you get a little looser with your drawings, just to get more variation. Overall I really enjoy your work. Your framing looks really nice and unique and I love the carton-like playful style you have. Very fun work!
