  1. I love the energy in your work. The pieces in which you are clearly confident and comfortable at are very lively, like your story board or your pleasure compositions. The clarity, shading and pencil work in the still life with the teddy bear is very professional and clean, but contrasted with the ink drawing of your roommate (which was clearly a struggle for you), feel almost awkward. You are clearly experimenting with style and I like the variety throughout your pieces in terms of line weight, darkness/lightness, and cropping. You could experiment with the viewer’s point of view (most of your pieces are straight on or slightly from an angle) by looking at something very close up, or from the bottom or the top or through something else.
Overall, I would suggest that you work on producing pieces that have your own personal style. I think that you are very much like myself in the way that you are just beginning to explore how various media works and what is even possible for you. However, your pieces with energy, the ones that I perceive as more “you” are much more successful. Developing your style will help flush out and work on creative problem solving and make you more recognizable (uniqueness in art is the best thing), but don’t stop experimenting!

  2. Your work is interesting and varied. I really like your variations in tone. You cover a broad spectrum from light to black with a good distribution of all tones in between. This is best in the charcoal pieces. I especially like the image of the ipods in the road. It has an interesting perspective and great range of values. Your use of the material, composition and perspective convey the feeling really well. It conveys the sense that something is wrong and brings the ipods to life. You can really relate to them!
Your use of line is really effective in pretty much all of your pieces. The lines are very clear and exact. The football player, the teddy bear, and the living room come across really well. I enjoy the living room and its detail and shape. The teddy bear is also clear and well shaded. I would suggest playing with this a little bit, perhaps adding a light background and playing with depth with lines that are less clear.
I have to say, I don't really follow the football player images. I can't completely tell which image comes first, although I'm assuming it read left to right. Is he sad that all the food is gone? Or is it a comment on American society, football and fast food?
In all, I think your style is developing. I really like your ability to bring objects to life!

  3. Aaron,

You have a unique style and I can see that you've branched out as the term has progressed. Your beginning work seems pretty tight and confined. But later on you get more fun and free. I love the teddy bear- it's super light and whimsical looking. Also, the football player pieces are where you style seems to really develop. I like that you are able to add movement and energy to your pieces. Nothing looks still, it's as though everything could just pop to life in a second!I think that because your pieces have so much life, they would really benefit from some color. Just a hint here and there, or maybe a page flooded with a bright spectrum. It could be a lot of fun to play around with. Also, maybe focus more on being creative during the process and not focusing so much on the end product. I think something really unique could turn out of an uncomfortable creative process.

    Keep drawing! Nice work man

  4. Aaron,

Yeah for almost being done with 19 critiques! Yours is the last but I assure you by far the best!!!

So, let us begin. I really enjoyed your work this term especially your work with the charcoal ipods. This pieces expresses exactly what you said in class, by the end you really got a grasp on the material. I love not only the concept, but also your awareness of composition. It is beneficial to the piece that you allowed the ipods to be in a literal space with a background.

On the contrary I think a strong presence of white whites and darker darks would elevate the feeling of the piece.

On the other hand I really enjoyed your pencil work and you ability to add a comical undertone to most of your work. I do believe that some more attention to shading like in the Rocketman piece would allow for some more feeling.

All in all i loved the teddybear the most, probably because teddybears are awesome and you allowed this to show in your work. Furthermore I like that you added a background to the flower image!

    Good work this term.

  5. The teddy bear drawing is my favorite. Has elements of shading on all he objects. Even tough the entire frame is not populated by color like some of your other pieces. The drawing looks natural. The empty space does not detract from it.

I would like to have seen this on the box still life. The boxes just feel empty. You did a good job with perspective tough.
Also I remember from the first critique of your shells that it was a bit flat. I see that you fixed the darkness of the line work but it too feels flat.

In contrats to your ipod story board feels alive the rendering you did entertains the eye.
Your figure drawing is clever. It is not a direct representation but it does a great job relaying the idea. They are cartoony in a good way.

Good job on all your pieces.

I really like how your work is your own, in the sense that you have a unique style. You can also see a big difference in improvement from your earlier work to your most resent. I feel the best piece you did was of the teddy bear your shading and proportions are spot on. You show a large range of values in it. I feel my big critique is that you have a lot of pictures with the same subject types. Four frontal views of people and three of the Ipod story board. I think that you should have tried to show more of a range of pieces. Also, besides in the Ipod pieces you have allot of white space. Try to fill up your page more, with more values like in the teddy bear piece. You need the darks to capture the attention of viewers. Right now there isn’t a lot of that in your work. Other then these small things great job!

  7. I really enjoyed your storyboard of the battle of the iPODs. It was very comical in an anime style of epic battle but comical that is was two iPODs battling out with their noise of their music. My other favorite work you did was the one of the seashell on the beach. It is a very iconic and transcendental depiction of how a simple object can mean so much any one person and also take them to a place that they have been before. It personally reminded me of surfing in southern California and the endless road trips I went on to there while in high school. I also enjoy the over all comical relief each and every one of your works has. They all have a very simplistic and fun depiction of life in their own manner with the over all use of softer colors and the use of pencil more than any other medium. Think you are the only person in the class to really explore the different possibilities the pencil contains as opposed to charcoal or ink. However your use of charcoal in the storyboard and the flower help give them another feel altogether of something deeper as well.
Though I find the use of pencil as the general medium very good, I want to see more charcoal and ink like the storyboard and flower. The one of your roommate is comical and also uses both of these media and I feel you can get the same effect when explored. Along the same note I want to see what happens when you just let your imagination go wild. Maybe just start by scribbling until you see something in the scribbles as inspiring. The footbal players pants I cannot tell if that was a fine tip black marker or a heavier pencil but I feel you should have tried for a more solid black not showing the coloring in strokes. Overall it was rad talking to you this term and you produced some very qualitative work.

  8. I really enjoyed your characters. I know you talked about how the drawing of your roommate wasn't very good, but I like it. I think that if it were more accurate in representing your roommate it would lose that quirky quality that makes the drawing so engaging. I also like the drawings of the football player. It's funny how the player's expression doesn't change even when the food is gone. It's as though he was just as sad when the food was there, so it really didn't matter if he had it or not. Very funny. The one thing I would point out is the narrow range of values in your work. If you expanded that range you could give your characters a more in depth environment to live in that would draw the viewer in even more to experience the fun qualities of those characters. Very nice work.

  9. I think that the drawing where you emphasized shades came out good, but some look a little dull with just white paper, and no color variation. Many of your drawings are very simple, which helps the humor and softness in most of them. There are many subtle aspects of the drawings that you must look for in order to understand the humor of the piece. I think that the simplicity of the rocketman picture really helps the piece. I think that if you drew the rocket at a different angle then you could make it look more like its going into space. I think that your drawing of the bear on the chair that we did in class is very detailed. Some of your other drawings don’t seem as detailed, but this one shows your true abilities. The sheet on the left of the frame is the best part of the piece. You can really see how the sheet is resting on the arm chair. I think that the drawing could look better if you showed the shadow of the chair on the ground as well. It would also look more professional if it were mounted better.

  10. I love the free spirit on your works. You can go really meticulous or very relaxed and loose. My favorite piece of yours would be the seashells. I really like the composition and softness of this piece. I only wish that the seashell on the bottom left was a bit bigger. I also really like the two dancing(?) ipods. That piece makes me smile, I think its wonderful and playful, and you used the different shades of the charcoal for different elements. I think your portfolio could be improved slightly if you had some of your pieces more carefully matted, some of the edges are crooked. I also really like your picture of the teddy bear. The composition and detail is pretty great. The shading is also pretty awesome. I wish you had given it a dark frame or something like that, I think it would have popped a bit more. I also really like the picture right underneath the teddy, the one of your sitting room (?) I love how careful the lines look and how there’s no shading or anything. The lack of shading gives it such a different feel from your other works, I really enjoyed that piece. I remember it from the wall when you put it up too. =)

  11. Aaron,
Your work is really fun and happy. It's unassuming and relaxed and really appealing because of that. I really like your use of the charcoal, although I think it could use some more attention to light and dark. I think you did a really good job with it and it's obvious that you mastered that medium throughout the term! I think I like your work with pencil the best. The teddy bear one is really good! You can really see how you've grown as an artist throughout the term. The shading is detailed and you did a good job getting texture out of your piece. I also really like the football player one. That's a figure and you did a really good job at it! Maybe pay more attention to lines and the thickness of lines. And also pay attention to composition in all of your pieces, because some of them are really strong compositionally and some aren't. You should definitely work on figures just stand alone because I think you would have a really cool style in them. Don't stop drawing even though your going into photography! It was cool getting to know you this term. Good luck with everything!
    Awesome job.

  12. My favorite of your work is the still life drawing of the bear in the chair. You effectively captured the how the light falls on the subjects of the piece, especially with the rendering of the chair. I just recommend deepening the value scale of the piece, which would make the areas of light really brighten as well as give even more dimension to the subjects. The majority of your drawings tend to be on the monotone side. If you deepen the value scale, the subjects will be pronounced even more and thus effectively convey the intentions of your drawing. As for the ink drawing of the rose, I think it was a great idea for you to add the thorns to the background of the piece, which really helped in evoking an entirely different feel than the what the conventional rose drawing would convey. I would suggest emphasizing that idea even further by playing with the shapes and composition of the piece (where the focal point should be etc.). Maybe try experimenting with perspective. For instance, you could try drawing the ipod from above and zoomed in. Also, I recommend working larger with the materials that are hard to control making lines and values with. That way the small details of the subjects will be easier to render.

  13. Aaron,
I Loved your storyboard because i thought it was so cute and creative and it was easy to tell what was going on. And i thought it was creative how you made them "spark" when they touched! So funny. Also, I really like your drawing of the teddy bear sitting in the chair because i thought the shading and detail of the bear, chair, and blanket was really well executed! Also, i think your transition of the football player is funny how hes missing a hand. I think you are very creative with your ideas and it sets it aside from everyone else. Something to work on could be working on adding more detail and working with the negative space. For example, i feel like more could have been added to the rocket drawing. also, you might try using darker lines or shading your interior drawing to make it stand out more! other than that GREAT job!! :)

  14. Aaron,
Your style is kind of like the drawings in a comic in the newspaper. They are comical and I can definitely tell what this stuff is.

My favorite drawing by you is that Pain drawing of your roommate. Drawing figures is so hard for me and I just make them look awkward. Yours at least look intentionally funny. Just to the left of that drawing is the rocket with the word “rocketman” on it. I love that song! Great choice. I see that you tend to draw light so I think if you made the background of that drawing dark, it would have added to the drawing.

Your still life drawing of the teddy bear is really good. Your use of shading is great and it looks like you spent some time on this one. Also, the blanket hanging is really good and I like you choice of not filling it in all the way and making the chair and the saw darker. It adds to the placement and dimension of the sketching.

Overall, I like your drawings. You did a great job this term!

  15. Aaron,

You have a very unique style with your people and I like it because of that. The picture with the “Justice” in the background is really cool and the football player is too because he changed the way he was sitting. You teddy bear might be your best picture. You did a really good job on it because it looks so real and fluffy. I want to take it and cuddle with it! Your living room picture is pretty good as well because it looks very accurate and real but if you would had shaded in it, then it would have looked even better!

I think you could have used darker lines on a few of your pieces. It would have made it much easier to see. You could have also shaded in many pictures instead of just using plain lines. The shell picture compared to your other pictures kind of looks like you didn’t put much time into it but the shell at the bottom left actually does look pretty real.

  16. Just cause its five o'clock doesn't mean I'm gonna half-ass your critique!

Anyway, the rose is the piece that most catches my eye when looking at your work as a whole. Possibly because it has a strong outline and nice shading which makes it pop. My favorite of yours is the teddy bear. Though having stuffing for muscles prevents movement anyway, i get the feeling that he is perfectly content right where he is. I like the piece so much because it is calm, and almost feels like a still life of childhood itself. Not to mention that the shading is good and the white space around the subject seems to balance. Your figures are interesting in the sense that they lean toward the cartoon side but are not childish in any way.

I would work on more realistic figures as well so you can have both styles at your disposal (people are the absolute hardest for me to draw too). You could also try adding some more dramatic shading to your works. I think it could take them to another level.

All in all i enjoyed your work this last term.

  17. I really like the vibe and style of your work. You have a distinct style, yet all of your pieces look so different. I appreciate that you thought about the whole composition in the drawing process. This makes your entire work look complete and full of life. Your still life with the bear looks awesome. The shading is very crisp and clean and the proportions look great, you did a really good job with this! I really like your storyboard pieces as well. The perspectives from this piece are awesome, especially the one from the top of the building. You did an awesome job shading and bringing life to these images. I think your shading was really good for most of your drawings, but for some I think you would benefit by making more of a contrast between the darks and lights. Also your interior and still life look a little one-dimensional and I think more dramatic shading used here would really finish the piece. You are very good with drawing accurately but I would also like to see you go wild and loosen up for a couple drawings. I would like to see you do this with ink and charcoal just to add some more variation in your portfolio. I really like how your style is comic like, it’s very fun and playful. I really enjoy your work for its high energy and the characters you used!
